Book Description
Excerpt from Philip Henson, the Southern Union Spy: The Hitherto Unwritten Record of a Hero of the War of the Rebellion This sketch of Philip Henson, the Southern Union Spy, which is offered to the public was per force hastily compiled and hastily written in order that the subject of it and the pages of the late war which it reveals for the first time might be brought before the veterans of the conflict to whom they are of the deepest interest. The materials were gathered and the work completed in the leisure time of four days so that it will be recognized readily that full investiga tion and careful arrangement were impossible. The salient points only are presented leaving to 'a future time the further development of materials of which this is merely a tithe. This explanation of the haste which is apparent in its pages and the blunders which may have crept in is due the readers from the writer. Book Description
No intelligence operatives in the Civil War risked more than southern unionists. Born and raised in the South, Philip Henson chose loyalty to the Union over secession. Working primarily for General Grenville Dodge, Henson's accurate reporting and daring missions came to the attention of Ulysses S. Grant.During his daring career, Henson came into contact one too many times with Confederate cavalry general, Nathan Bedford Forrest. He and his wife were both arrested and it seemed certain that Henson would make the acquaintance with a hangman's noose. This remarkable career is told here in detail."A brave, fearless and exceedingly valuable scout."--Edward Hatch, Brev. Maj.-General."He performed services that no other man would."--G. M. Dodge, Major-General."He performed deeds which no other man could have done successfully."--Samuel Gilbert, Late Brig.-General.After the war, Henson was a Special Secret Service Agent with orders from General Grant.Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

Book Description
In 1861, Colonel Grenville Dodge organized the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment and led them off to war. They had few uniforms or weapons and were more of a mob than a military unit, but Dodge shaped them into a fighting force that won honors on the battlefield and gained respect as one of the best regiments in the Union army. Promoted to the rank of major-general, Dodge became one of the youngest divisional, corps and departmental commanders in the Army. A superb field general, he also organized a network of more than 100 spies to gather military intelligence and built railroads to supply the troops in the Western Theater. This book covers Dodge's Civil War career and the history of the 4th Iowa, who fought at Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, Chattanooga and Atlanta.
