Perichoresis (mutual indwelling) is a concept used extensively in the so-called Trinitarian revival; and yet no book-length study in English exists probing how the term actually developed in the "classical period" of Christian doctrine and how it was carefully deployed in relation to Christian dogma. Consequently, perichoresis is often used in imprecise and even careless ways. This path-breaking study aims at placing our understanding of the term on firmer footing, clarifying its actual usage in relation to doctrines of God, Christ, and salvation in the thought of John of Damascus, the eighth-century theologian, monk, and hymn writer who gave it its historically influential application. Since John summed up a whole theological tradition, this work provides not only an introduction to his theological vision but also to the key themes of Greek patristic thought generally and thereby lays an essential foundation for those who would dig deeper into the present-day usefulness of perichoresis.

The concept of the 'person' is a crucial yet elusive component in the development of Western thought. Few concepts are as replete with definitional difficulty. Equally important is the application of a proper definition to all major Christian doctrinal commonplaces. This work, recognizing the insufficiency of modern theology to offer a cogent concept of 'person', proposes a thorough historical and theological evaluation of Trinitarian personhood presented in three critical paradigm-shifts by which one can measure the development of the idea of true personhood presented. The three watershed eras of discernment of divine personhood presented are seen here as first, the Cappadocian position of the mutual indwelling (perichoresis) of the divine persons is contrasted with Augustine's view of the place of relations in defining divine persons. Second, the ideas of Richard of St. Victor whose caritas consummata and its relational implications met the nemesis of the Thomistic category of 'subsistent relations'. And last, as an example of this important discussion in modernity, the German, Heribert Mÿhlen's dynamic phenomenological approach to Triune personhood is offered as a means of countering the implicit modalisms of Barth and Rahner. If the personhood of God is in essence Being-in-Another then Christianity must apply that ontology to all sectors of reality to be fully Christian.

Whereas earlier times seemed to have a clear understanding about the moral implications of personhood and its boundaries, today there is little consensus on such matters. Starting in the early to mid-nineteenth century, Catholic theology witnessed a profound retrieval of patristic reflection on the interrelationship of the Virgin Mary and the Church. This dynamic reached a doctrinal high point with the declarations of Vatican II and Pope Paul VI concerning Mary as “type of the Church” and “Mother of the Church,” and it also provided the impetus for further theological exploration of the deeper unity of the Mother of Christ and his mystical body. In A Bride Adorned, John L. Nepil examines how this interrelationship has been formulated in modern theology in terms of perichoresis, a notion of unconfused reciprocity or interpenetration drawn from Christology and Trinitarian theology first applied to Mary and the Church by the nineteenth-century German theologian Matthias Scheeben. In the first part of the study, Nepil treats the foundations of this formulation, outlining its historical background and creative articulation by Scheeben. The second part tracks developments of Scheeben’s insight in the thought of twentieth-century theological luminaries Charles Journet, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Louis Bouyer, and Leo Scheffczyk, each of whom distinctively articulate the shared conviction that neither Mary nor the Church can be understood apart from each other. The third part draws out the far-reaching doctrinal and pastoral implications of this deepened account of the Mary–Church relation, establishing its vital importance for ongoing theological and ecclesial renewal. Through his careful engagement with these figures, Nepil shows how Mary and the Church are to be understood as two realizations of a single mystery.
