In the case of computed tomography (CT) scan, the measurement of effective dose is very essential. A patient size-dependent factor will be used to estimate patient dose from scanner output indices (e.g. Computed tomography dose index, CTDIvol) for patients of different sizes. The size dependent factor shall be used over a range of patient sizes, and extends to large patients as well as small patients.This research performed the estimation of effective dose during CT scan of brain of patients by using PMMA 32 cm reference phantom for treatment planning. The effective dose has been calculated for different patients after CT scan of head or brain. To estimate the effective dose different parameters like anterior posterior (AP), lateral (LAT), AP+LAT dimension, effective diameter, dose length product (DLP) and size specific dose estimate (SSDE) have been calculated. The calculated value of effective dose was in the range of (346-587) mSv. The relations of effective diameter with AP, LAT, AP+LAT dimension, SSDE and age of the patients have been analyzed.

Pediatric body CT began in earnest in 1976 when for the first time a body CT machine was installed in a pediatric institution, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The first images were received with great enthusiasm. Abstract : Abstract: Children are at greater risk of radiation exposure than adults because the rapidly dividing cells of children tend to be more radiosensitive and they have a longer expected life time in which to develop potential radiation injury. Some studies have surveyed computed tomography (CT) radiation doses and several studies have established diagnostic reference levels according to patient age or body size; however, no survey of CT radiation doses with a large number of patients has yet been carried out in South Korea. The aim of the present study was to investigate the radiation dose in pediatric CT examinations performed throughout South Korea. From 512 CT (222 brain CT, 105 chest CT, and 185 abdominopelvic CT) scans that were referred to our tertiary hospital, a dose report sheet was available for retrospective analysis of CT scan protocols and dose, including the volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol ), dose-length product (DLP), effective dose, and size-specific dose estimates (SSDE). At 55.2%, multiphase CT was the most frequently performed protocol for abdominopelvic CT. Tube current modulation was applied most often in abdominopelvic CT and chest CT, accounting for 70.1% and 62.7%, respectively. Regarding the CT dose, the interquartile ranges of the CTDIvol were 11.1 to 22.5 (newborns), 16.6 to 39.1 (≤1 year), 14.6 to 41.7 (2–5 years), 23.5 to 44.1 (6–10 years), and 31.4 to 55.3 (≤15 years) for brain CT; 1.3 to 5.7 (≤1 year), 3.9 to 6.8 (2–5 years), 3.9 to 9.3 (6–10 years), and 7.7 to 13.8 (≤15 years) for chest CT; and 4.0 to 7.5 (≤1 year), 4.2 to 8.9 (2–5 years), 5.7 to 12.4 (6–10 years), and 7.6 to 16.6 (≤15 years) for abdominopelvic CT. Pediatric patients have higher risk of cancer than adult patients when exposed to Computed Tomography (CT) radiation. This study intends to contributeto the establishment of national diagnostic reference level for CT doses that will be used for the radiation protection of patients. The CT Machine specifications were listed the scanning parameters of the CT scanning machines during the chest and abdominal CT examination and demographic profiles of pediatric patients whose ages are between 0-15 years were noted. The CTDIw for chest and abdominal CT are measured using a 16cm diameter body equivalent acrylic phantom and Unfors pencil type ioniization chamber. The DLP and DLP slice were computed using the measured CTDIw and the phantom data. the effective dose was also estimated for both procedures. The summary of results of CTDIw showed that the dose received by pediatric patients im age groups 1, 2, and 3 received the same dose of 18.038 mGy and 20.43 mGy was received by patient age group 4. The total DPL values are the same for age groups 1-3. The value of 270.6 mGy-cm is 32.4% lower in age groups 2, 55% lower in group 3 and a value of 306.4 mGy-cm is 45.2% lesser in age group 4. All these values are within the initial diagnostic reference level. On the contry, Age group 1 has a computed DLP of 270.6 mGy-cm which is 35.3 higher than the initial diagnostic reference level. The results showed that 0 year old patients are at risk the most since the computed effective doses are not within the initial reference values of adjustments were not made according to patient's age. Without sacrificing the image quality, this suggests the patients can receive lower radiation doses if necessary modifications would be made. Thus risks from effects of CT radiation can be minimized.
