Book Description
The Icelandic financial system is large, concentrated and interconnected - banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) - domestically and internationally. There are 10 banks: 4 commercial banks and 6 savings banks, but the system is dominated by just three of the commercial banks (Arion banki, Íslandsbanki and Landsbankinn) that together account for 95 percent of banking assets. Cash use is declining as a percentage of point of sale (POS) transactions, leading to an increasing dependence on electronic payment means. The debit and credit cards used for most retail transactions rely on international communications with Visa and Mastercard.

Iceland has implemented a broad-based program of financial liberalization and market reforms. Iceland's conduct of monetary and financial policies is highly transparent, which contributes in an important way to the stability and efficiency of the financial system. Both macroprudential and microprudential indicators suggest that the system may be vulnerable to a macroeconomic shock. The Icelandic financial system is vulnerable to market risk and credit risk. The government intends to use the results of the assessment to strengthen their operations and enhance improvements to the regulatory framework.

Book Description
In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book Description
Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-515/ This work maps out the pay systems used in the fisheries' sectors of Denmark, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Based on pay information, the evolution of pay and the distribution of resource rents among participating groups are analysed. The main findings suggest that Nordic commercial fishers are well paid compared to other occupations. As more efficient fisheries management regimes are introduced fishers remaining in the sector have been able to substantially increase their salaries. Likewise, as fisheries management have evolved so has the rents captured by fishers, vessel owners, quota owners and the public. Calculations show that the introduction of ITQ like management systems have contributed substantially to societal welfare across the Nordic countries.

Book Description
This book presents a detailed account of Iceland’s recovery from the tumultuous banking collapse that overturned its financial industry in 2008. Early chapters recount how Iceland’s central bank was unable to follow the quantitative easing policies of the time to print money and save the banks, while serving the world ́s smallest currency area. The book goes on to explore how the government exercised force majeure rights to implement emergency legislation aimed at preventing the “socialization of losses”. Later chapters investigate how, eight years later, these policies have yielded renewed growth and reinvigorated liquidity streams for the financial system. The authors argue that Iceland, long-called the ‘canary in the coal mine’ of the developed world, offers important lessons for the future. This book will be useful to all readers interested in better understanding the unique history of Iceland’s banking crisis and the phenomena of its recovery.

Book Description
This Report on Observance of Standards and Codes on Iceland summarizes the findings and recommendations of the assessment. This assessment of the current state of the implementation of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision in Iceland has been completed as a stand-alone Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes undertaken by the IMF during March of 2014 at the request of the Icelandic authorities. It is advised to ensure planned legislative amendments clarify the roles regarding banking supervision of liquidity risk, including corrective action. Ensure planned legislative amendments clarify Financial Supervisory Authority in Iceland (FME) actions in the enforcement of buffers. It is also recommended to amend processes, systems and practices in order to use the full definition of qualified holder, beyond the mere quantitative thresholds. The assessment also recommends developing rules and guidelines for banks on the benchmarks, standards, and procedures that the FME will follow in determining the adequacy of bank’s risk management and governance systems.
