Continuum and Particle Computations of Hypersonic Shock Interaction Flows

Book Description
There has been increasing interest in developing numerical methods and accurate physical models for solving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problems of hypersonic continuum and rarefied flows. In this work, we establish a framework for validating numerical methods and physical models employed in popular CFD codes. The first main objective of this work is to assess the ability of current state-of-the-art methods to simulate challenging hypersonic flow problems by comparing to well characterized experiments. The second main objective is to provide benchmark numerical solutions to hypersonic double-cone laminar flows that can be used as code validation cases.

Roll-damping Derivative Calculations for Spinning Sharp and Blunt Cones in Supersonic and Hypersonic Flow
Author: Arloe W. Mayne (Jr.)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Cone
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
The boundary-layer equations in a Crocco variables form have been numerically solved for flow over spinning sharp and blunt cones at zero incidence to supersonic and hypersonic streams. Both laminar and turbulent flows have been treated, and for the blunt cases swallowing of the inviscid entropy layer by the boundary layer has been considered. The item of primary interest is roll damping, and results of a parametric study involving Mach number, Reynolds number, cone angle, and bluntness ratio are presented. Limited comparisons with experimental data and another method of computation are also presented. (Author).

Rarefied Gas Dynamics
Author: Andrew D. Ketsdever
Publisher: American Institute of Physics
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1118
Book Description
The papers in these proceedings were peer reviewed. The RGD Symposia are highly inter-disciplinary and encompass all aspects of rarefaction and non-equilibrium phenomena in gases. Rarefied flow phenomena include the mechanics and physics of low density gases and the analysis of flows which take place on a spatial scale comparable to the mean free path of a gas. Topics covered include: Kinetic theory and transport theory; numerical methods including direct simulation Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics; gas-surface phenomena; nano- and microscale flows; molecular beams, atom and molecular optics; clusters and aerosols; external flows including space and vacuum technologies; plume flows; hypersonic flows; molecular collision dynamics; relaxation processes; ionized gas flows; physics of the space environment; plasma processing; experimental techniques; diagnostics including laser induced fluorescence and electron beams; applications. With the increase in space activities and microfabrication capabilities, new themes have emerged including rarefied hypersonic flows, non-equilibrium gases, plasma processing, nano- and micro-scale flows at relatively high pressures, along with parallel and hybrid computational developments. Because the RGD Symposia are recognized as the principle forum for the presentation of recent advances in this field, it is a must for engineers and scientists in a variety of specialties.

Hypersonic Rarefied Flow Over Sharp Slender Cones
Author: Marvin I. Kussoy
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics, Hypersonic
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
Drag, heat transfer, and number flux were measured on sharp cones in the near free, molecule flow regime, and the results were compared with available Monte Carlo calculations. In general, the calculations predicted the magnitude of the data; however, the heat transfer and drag increased with increasing Knudsen number at a faster rate than predicted. Also the drag coefficients measured for the slender cones at high Knudsen number were higher than predicted for free molecule flow. These disagreements between theory and experiment could possibly be attributed to the simplicity of the surface interaction laws assumed in the theory. Reynolds analogy factors obtained from the experimental measurements agreed with free-molecule values and also with that obtained by the Monte Carlo technique.
