Nowadays, stand-alone Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning accuracy is not sufficient for a growing number of land users. Sub-meter or even centimeter accuracy is becoming more and more crucial in many applications. Especially for navigating rovers in the urban environment, final positioning accuracy can be worse as the dramatically lack and contaminations of GNSS measurements. To achieve a more accurate positioning, the GNSS carrier phase measurements appear mandatory. These measurements have a tracking error more precise by a factor of a hundred than the usual code pseudorange measurements. However, they are also less robust and include a so-called integer ambiguity that prevents them to be used directly for positioning. While carrier phase measurements are widely used in applications located in open environments, this thesis focuses on trying to use them in a much more challenging urban environment. To do so, Real Time-Kinematic (RTK) methodology is used, which is taking advantage on the spatially correlated property of most code and carrier phase measurements errors. Besides, the thesis also tries to take advantage of a dual GNSS constellation, GPS and GLONASS, to strengthen the position solution and the reliable use of carrier phase measurements. Finally, to make up the disadvantages of GNSS in urban areas, a low-cost MEMS is also integrated to the final solution. Regarding the use of carrier phase measurements, a modified version of Partial Integer Ambiguity Resolution (Partial-IAR) is proposed to convert as reliably as possible carrier phase measurements into absolute pseudoranges. Moreover, carrier phase Cycle Slip (CS) being quite frequent in urban areas, thus creating discontinuities of the measured carrier phases, a new detection and repair mechanism of CSs is proposed to continuously benefit from the high precision of carrier phases. Finally, tests based on real data collected around Toulouse are used to test the performance of the whole methodology.

The most precise relative positioning obtained using differential GPS depends on accurately determining carrier-phase integer ambiguities. To achieve high precision, many current static and kinematic algorithms use a floating- point solution until enough information becomes available to fix the carrier- phase ambiguities accurately. A mew method is presented that uses a multiple model Kalman filter to resolve the carrier-phase integer ambiguities. This method starts with the floating-point results, yet smoothly and rapidly attains the precision of the correct fixed-integer solution, eliminating the need to decide when to switch from the floating to the fixed-integer solution. This method is based on a theoretically correct blending of solutions from multiple filters. This new technique is computationally efficient, providing a robust navigation solution useful in demanding applications such as precision landing and autonomous navigation. The new method was evaluated during static ground and flight tests. Initial results indicate that the new method is capable of quickly resolving the carrier-phase ambiguities and provides a highly accurate (centimeter-level) navigation solution. However, the performance of the new method depends on the correct carrier-phase ambiguity set being hypothesized by one of the multiple filters. Recommendations for further research are included.

Safety-of-life Carrier phase Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (CDGNSS) positioning systems must provide guarantees that their position estimates have errors that are smaller than specified levels, called alert limits (AL). These guarantees are specified as an allowable probability, called integrity risk (IR), that the error exceeds its AL. Typical values of IR are between 10−9 and 10−7, per hour of operation. CDGNSS positioning has been demonstrated to provide centimeter-accurate estimates of a vehicle's location when the so-called integer ambiguities are resolved; however, in safety-of-life applications, the probability of incorrectly resolving the integer ambiguities frequently exceeds the allowable IR. To address this limitation, existing algorithms bound the positioning error caused by incorrectly resolved ambiguities. If such bounds satisfy the AL, then the integer-resolved, or fixed, solution can be used. Unfortunately, the positioning error from incorrect fixing can exceed several meters, which fails to satisfy the most demanding ALs for autonomous vehicles. This dissertation offers three contributions to the science of CDGNSS positioning for safety-of-life applications. First, a novel algorithm is developed that validates the correctness of integer ambiguity estimates. This algorithm, called Generalized Integer Aperture Bootstrapping (GIAB), establishes a rigorous, fixed-missed-detection-rate test that provides a guarantee that the integer ambiguities have been fixed correctly. GIAB also allows for partial fixing, where a subset of the ambiguities are resolved. Partial fixing allows for graceful degradation of positioning when measurement quality is poor. GIAB is derived analytically and validated via Monte Carlo simulation. Its performance is compared with existing ambiguity validation techniques. Second, the probability density function of the positioning estimate resulting from GIAB is derived. This distribution leads to a provable bound on the IR that the estimate has errors exceeding the specified ALs. This bound allows GIAB to be used for safety-of-life application while satisfying ALs of less than a meter. Third, triplex CDGNSS architectures, in which the vehicle position is estimated using three separate navigation systems with mid-level voting (MLV) logic, are analyzed. Such architectures are commonly used since they are robust to single equipment failures, but the integrity benefit of their fault-free performance has not previously been evaluated. It is shown that integer-fixed CDGNSS solutions improve in accuracy performance, but gain no integrity benefit. However, when the integer constraint is not enforced, the so called CDGNSS float solution benefits greatly from MLV in both accuracy and integrity performance.
