Excerpt from Supplement to the Cybele Britannica, Vol. 1: To Be Continued Occasionally as a Record of Progressive Knowledge Concerning the Distribution of Plants in Britain A Supplement to the Cybele Britannica, commenced before any considerable accumulation of new facts has been obtained, may appear at first thought to be rather a premature proceeding. The wish to continue the work by supplementary sheets, to be printed from time to time as occasion should arise, was stated and explained at the end of volume fourth, page 522. The chief reason for this early commencement, among other minor motives inducing thereto, may be found in that large section of this present part, which will bear the title of Sub provincial Distribution' some pages onward. One of the objects sought by that section, is to draw attention to those local facts which it is desirable that botanical ob servers should especially look out for, whether around their own abodes or during their tours from home, as the opportunities may occur. And that section virtually involving numerous queries addressed to all persons oh servant of facts in local botany, I propose to send out Copies of this Part very generally, as is intimated in the Notice on the opposite page. The remarks which will here precede that largest section, will perhaps sufficiently suggest the existence also of other minor motives for so soon commencing a Supplement.
