Book Description
What life do you want to live? What country do you want to live in? On the left hand, you have nothing; someone makes all the decisions regarding your life. On the right hand, you have everything, including your life and choice. That freedom of choice brings responsibility, wherein you have to put effort into your life and your freedom. That brings us to honesty, truth, compassion, love, and responsibility--those together make a fist to include penalty. Why is it those six words are not included in our US Constitution? When their child is leaving home to live their life, every parent will think and hope their child has ample amounts of honesty, truth, compassion, love, and responsibility in their character. You do what you can so your child has what I call the big five plus one. You feel better knowing your child has the qualities just mentioned. Why would we launch an infant country without the same? Why have we amended our Constitution twenty-seven times without including the big five? I have rewritten the Constitution to include the big five plus one. If you think you live in a democracy or representative government, then you are wrong. You may have gotten used to the life you are living, but is your life and your country what you want? You can put effort into achieving goals or not. If there is no effort, then it will never happen. It is up to you. Are you a person who stands upon the shoulders of others, or are you a person who feels comfortable enough that you can stand by yourself?

Thomas Kuhn's Revolution
Author: James A. Marcum
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1847141943
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
The influence of Thomas Kuhn (1922 -1996) on the history and philosophy of science has been truly enormous. In 1962, Kuhn's famous work, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, helped to inaugurate a revolution - the historiographic revolution - in the latter half of the twentieth century, providing a new understanding of science in which 'paradigm shifts' (scientific revolutions) are punctuated with periods of stasis (normal science). Kuhn's revolution not only had a huge impact on the history and philosophy of science but on other disciplines as well, including sociology, education, economics, theology, and even science policy. James A. Marcum's book focuses on the following questions: What exactly was Kuhn's historiographic revolution? How did it come about? Why did it have the impact it did? What, if any, will its future impact be for both academia and society? At the heart of the answers to these questions is the person of Kuhn himself, i.e., his personality, his pedagogical style, his institutional and social commitments, and the intellectual and social context in which he practiced his trade. Drawing on the rich archival sources at MIT, and engaging fully with current scholarship on Kuhn, Marcum's is the first book to show in detail how Kuhn's influence transcended the boundaries of the history and philosophy of science community to reach many others - sociologists, economists, theologians, political scientists, educators, and even policy makers and politicians.

Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions - 50 Years On
Author: William J. Devlin
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319133837
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
In 1962, the publication of Thomas Kuhn’s Structure ‘revolutionized’ the way one conducts philosophical and historical studies of science. Through the introduction of both memorable and controversial notions, such as paradigms, scientific revolutions, and incommensurability, Kuhn argued against the traditionally accepted notion of scientific change as a progression towards the truth about nature, and instead substituted the idea that science is a puzzle solving activity, operating under paradigms, which become discarded after it fails to respond accordingly to anomalous challenges and a rival paradigm. Kuhn’s Structure has sold over 1.4 million copies and the Times Literary Supplement named it one of the “Hundred Most Influential Books since the Second World War.” Now, fifty years after this groundbreaking work was published, this volume offers a timely reappraisal of the legacy of Kuhn’s book and an investigation into what Structure offers philosophical, historical, and sociological studies of science in the future.

Thomas S. Kuhn's 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions' was a watershed event when it was published in 1962, upending the previous understanding of science as a slow, logical accumulation of facts and introducing, with the concept of the 'paradigm shift,' social and psychological considerations into the heart of the scientific process. From the Manpower Revolution to the Activation Paradigm
Author: J. Timo Weishaupt
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9089642528
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 398
Book Description
This illuminating book examines the origins and evolution of labor market policy in Western Europe in three phases: a manpower revolution during the 1960s and 1970s; a phase of international disagreement about the causes of and remedies for unemployment, which triggered a variety of policy responses in the late 1970s and 1980s; and, finally, the emergence of an activation paradigm in the late 1990s, the influence of which continues to reverberate today. J. Timo Weishaupt contends that the evolution of labor market policy is determined not only by historical trajectories or coalitional struggles, but also by policy makers' changing normative and cognitive beliefs. Including case studies of Austria, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, this study will be of value to anyone interested in labor market policy and its governance.
