Two 1:40-scale hydraulic models were used to study the outlet works for Lost Creek Dam. One model reproduced a portion of forebay, the selective withdrawal intake tower, regulating outlet valve section, tunnel, chute, energy dissipator, penstock intake and curve, powerhouse, and a section of downstream channel. The other model reproduced the tower bypass system. The intake tower, tunnel and penstock intakes, and penstock curve were satisfactory with all operating conditions observed. The transition from the tunnel to the chute was not adequate with the highest discharges, and wave suppressors were added to the walls to create satisfactory flow conditions in the chute. The original energy dissipator, a shallow hydraulic jump stilling basin, was not adequate and was replaced with a 30-degree, 50-ft-radium flip bucket because a minimum amount of rock excavation was desired. The tower bypass system was satisfactory with the design condition of 2,100 cfs and minimum pool elev 1826 but not satisfactory with a design flow of 1,050 cfs and minimum pool elev 1789. Only flows less than 700 cfs could be passed with pool elev 1789 without possible vortex problems. (Author).
