Book Description
Excerpt from Organizing and Conducting Safety Work in Mines During the past few years there has been marked progress in safety work by mining companies. Such work has usually been started and directed by an executive, with the aid and advice of individuals or committees reporting to him, independently of the operating department. The practice has been to awaken the interest of the employees in the causes, results, and avoidance of accidents; to convince them of the genuine desire of the company to bring about increased safety; and to obtain the cooperation of officials and employees in suggesting and adopting protective measures. Book Description
Excerpt from Coal Miners' Safety Manual: A Handbooks for Miners It is the moral and legal obligation of the operators of coal mines to provide safe mines in which to work and to regulate their operation so as to prevent fatalities and injuries. How ever, the men who work also are under obligation to prevent accidents. The various State mining laws place certain restrictions upon the conduct of the miners for their safety, and every miner, knows that he, as well as the mine owner, can do far more than is required by law to help reduce the toll of accidents in mines. Book Description
Excerpt from Mine Rescue Work and Organization In commending this book to both learners and learned in what is called Mine "Rescue" work as a ready means of reference to the general state of knowledge of the subject, I would like to take the opportunity of impressing on all concerned, how important it still remains that all the ordinary means of seeking access to and exploring a mine after any accident, or in case of need, should be intelligently used and exhausted before any call is made upon such jeopardous appliances as breathing dresses in poisonous gases. There is no better method, for instance, of recovering a mine after an explosion than the old-fashioned way of taking in fresh breathable air, carefully tested by the small bird and safety lamp, and resort should only be made to the breathing dress, worn by an expert, when a well-defined purpose appears which can be described in terms of locality and distance. It should be as rare that men should be required to dive into bad air in a breathing dress, as it is to dive into water in a similar appliance. Book Description
Excerpt from Relating to Safety and Efficiency in Mines: April, 1916 More miners are killed from falls of rock and ore than from any other cause. The prevention of accidents of this nature is a matter which depends almost entirely on knowledge of the nature of the ground and the exercise of care, chiefly by the miner but also by the mine official. There are practically no mechanical safety appliances designed to prevent such accidents, unless timber may be considered as a safety device. Herein lies the great difference from other classes of mine accidents, for the prevention of nearly all of which there are provided numerous and varied types of safety devices.
