Book Description
The Arizona Organized Crime Project began in 1980, when the legislature, after extensive hearings, appropriated $3.8 million for the project in addition to the regular appropriation for the work of the State police and the attorney general's office. The program's initial efforts focused on developing anticrime capabilities through a mix of proactive and reactive detection and investigative activities, to be followed by criminal and civil remedies. The efforts also focused on white-collar crime occurring in the organized crime context. The project's activities included training, orientation of the business and public sectors regarding organized crime, gathering and analyzing intelligence, liaison with Federal and local law enforcement efforts, investigation, proactive and reactive approaches, and criminal and civil litigation. An assessment of the first 18 months of the project's operations, discussions of organized crime generally and in Arizona, chapter notes, an index, and an appendix presenting Arizona's 1978 Racketeering Act are provided.

Book Description
This book is the result of a conference which the editors, with the support of Dutch authorities, organized in October 22-26, 1990, in The Hague between the members of the New York State Organized Crime Task Force and Dutch officials and academics concerned with the topic. The contributors, on the one hand, stress the changing nature of organized crime and the mechanisms it utilizes to control legitimate industries. On the other hand, they emphasize and demonstrate the need for sophisticated pro-active strategies that differ from traditional reactive law enforcement approaches. This book is the first to systematically compare the American situation (New York) and the European situation (Netherlands); two urban areas which show many similarities.

Book Description
Transnational organized crime interferes with the everyday lives of more and more people - and represents a serious threat to democracy. By now, organized crime has become an inherent feature of economic globalization, and the fine line between the legal and illegal operation of business networks is blurred. Additionally, few experts could claim to have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the laws and regulations governing the international flow of trade, and hence of the borderline towards criminal transactions. This book offers contributions from 12 countries around the world authored by 25 experts from a wide range of academic disciplines, representatives from civil society organizations and private industry, journalists, as well as activists. Recognizing the complexity of the issue, this publication provides a cross cultural and multi-disciplinary analysis of transnational organized crime including a historical approach from different regional and cultural contexts.

Book Description
Transnational organized crime poses a serious threat to the international community. This volume, the product of a UN conference, discusses the dangers of transnational organized crime and identifies forms of regional, national and international co-operation for its prevention and control, including intelligence networks, preventive strategies, extradition treaties, criminalizing participation in criminal organizations and the elaboration of an international convention. The reduction and subsequent containment of transnational organized crime require governments not only to recognize the seriousness of the challenge, but also to allocate resources commensurate with this challenge. The authors warn that should the international community fail to do this, the prospects for democratic government and the rule of law will be gloomy.
