“Washtub Gold” is a fictional novel based on ‘Operation Washtub’, an actual Cold War plan which was activated in Alaska in the 1950’s. The goal was the training of selected residents of the Territory of Alaska for intelligence and resistance operations if the Territory were occupied by Russian troops. In 1952, newly commissioned army lieutenant Ben Hunnicutt is diverted from orders to Korea and sent to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage to work with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, recruiting, training, and supplying these stay-behind-agents. Ben visits prospective agents in small towns and seaports, recruiting and becoming friends with commercial fishermen, bush pilots, homesteaders, and guides. He becomes enamored of Alaska, and vows to someday return and see more of this vast and beautiful Territory. Fifteen years later, Ben returns to the new state of Alaska as a retired Major. Attempting to locate some of his old friends from Operation Washtub, he finds a suspicious number of them have disappeared or died in odd accidents. The caches of raw gold with which they were provided as payment, and to finance their spying activities, have also vanished. Since project Washtub has long been shut down, he solicits the local office of the FBI to locate former stay-behind-agents so he can investigate further. He is paired with FBI agent Elise Nichole, one of the very few female agents in the Bureau at that time, and one whose struggle for equality has resulted in a mistrust of men. Ben, a lifelong bachelor, is smitten by Liz, the lovely but unapproachable agent. Their strained relationship varies from luke-warm to cold as they work their way through the puzzles of the case. The sudden and unexpected revelation of the killer’s identity places them both in immediate jeopardy. The story takes Ben onto Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, through Cooper Landing, Seward and through abandoned World War Two fortifications along Resurrection Bay. The final confrontation involves a trip by Ben and Liz to the odd, isolated town of Whittier, via the Alaska Railroad. Retired Army Major Ben Hunnicutt, living in Eagle River, Alaska, encounters an old Army friend who now commands the Nike Hercules guided missile units which defend Anchorage and the nearby military bases from surprise attack by Soviet long range bombers. The Cold War is at its height and the lower 48 states are in turmoil from rioting, dissident groups committing acts of domestic terrorism, and a general rejection of the war in Viet Nam. The Nike commander enlists the aid of Ben and his FBI Agent girlfriend, Liz Nichole, in investigating a rumored plot by a fringe Weathermen group to hijack a Nike missile nuclear warhead. They threaten to cause widespread radioactive contamination of the Anchorage bowl unless granted certain military and political concessions by the government. The hijacking succeeds, and Ben must locate the hidden warhead and prevent the planned incident which would spread radioactive material throughout the area. He tracks the group to its hiding place in an abandoned mine near Palmer, but gets careless and is captured. Ben takes advantage of a freak accident to escape and recover the nuclear weapon, but must then find a way to counter the group's Plan B, which is to detonate an on-site missile by long range rifle fire. Ben takes to the mountains with an ancient, but trusted, Sharps single-shot rifle to engage a shooter armed with a modern long-range target rifle equipped with a high-powered telescopic sight.

Upon retirement in 1967 he keeps a promise to himself and moves to Anchorage, at last able to explore the state which so fascinated him on his first visit. In 1972, retired and at leisure, he is mysteriously contacted by an intelligence officer that he befriended while on R & R in Japan during the Korean War. The Vietnam War is in full swing, and the stability of the South Vietnamese government is being threatened by a large-scale sacking of the nation’s treasury. The stolen gold is apparently being smuggled to mining operations in Alaska where it is “laundered” and converted to cash. Ben is asked to ferret out the rogue miners so the government can move in and return the looted gold to the treasury of South Vietnam. As usual, the task is more complex and more dangerous than it seems. Ben must call on some of his offbeat friends to see him through.
