Book Description
This volume contains papers on semi-linear and quasi-linear elliptic equations from the workshop on Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, in honor of Jean-Pierre Gossez's 65th birthday, held September 2-4, 2009 at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. The workshop reflected Gossez's contributions in nonlinear elliptic PDEs and provided an opening to new directions in this very active research area. Presentations covered recent progress in Gossez's favorite topics, namely various problems related to the $p$-Laplacian operator, the antimaximum principle, the Fucik Spectrum, and other related subjects. This volume will be of principle interest to researchers in nonlinear analysis, especially in partial differential equations of elliptic type.

Book Description
This volume presents a collection of selected papers by the prominent Brazilian mathematician Djairo G. de Figueiredo, who has made significant contributions in the area of Differential Equations and Analysis. His work has been highly influential as a challenge and inspiration to young mathematicians as well as in development of the general area of analysis in his home country of Brazil. In addition to a large body of research covering a variety of areas including geometry of Banach spaces, monotone operators, nonlinear elliptic problems and variational methods applied to differential equations, de Figueiredo is known for his many monographs and books. Among others, this book offers a sample of the work of Djairo, as he is commonly addressed, advancing the study of superlinear elliptic problems (both scalar and system cases), including questions on critical Sobolev exponents and maximum principles for non-cooperative elliptic systems in Hamiltonian form.

Book Description
As is well known, The Great Divide (a.k.a. The Continental Divide) is formed by the Rocky Mountains stretching from north to south across North America. It creates a virtual "stone wall" so high that wind, rain, snow, etc. cannot cross it. This keeps the weather distinct on both sides. Since railroad trains cannot climb steep grades and tunnels through these mountains are almost formidable, the Canadian Pacific Railroad searched for a mountain pass providing the lowest grade for its tracks. Employees discovered a suitable mountain pass, called the Kicking Horse Pass, el. 5404 ft., near Banff, Alberta. (One can speculate as to the reason for the name.) This pass is also used by the Trans-Canada Highway. At the highest point of the pass the railroad tracks are horizontal with mountains rising on both sides. A mountain stream divides into two branches, one flowing into the Atlantic Ocean and the other into the Pacific. One can literally stand (as the author did) with one foot in the Atlantic Ocean and the other in the Pacific. The author has observed many mountain passes in the Rocky Mountains and Alps. What connections do mountain passes have with nonlinear partial dif ferential equations? To find out, read on ...

Book Description
Many nonlinear problems in physics, engineering, biology and social sciences can be reduced to finding critical points of functionals. While minimax and Morse theories provide answers to many situations and problems on the existence of multiple critical points of a functional, they often cannot provide much-needed additional properties of these critical points. Sign-changing critical point theory has emerged as a new area of rich research on critical points of a differentiable functional with important applications to nonlinear elliptic PDEs. This book is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers involved in sign-changing critical point theory, PDEs, global analysis, and nonlinear functional analysis.

Book Description
Nonlinear Differential Problems with Smooth and Nonsmooth Constraints systematically evaluates how to solve boundary value problems with smooth and nonsmooth constraints. Primarily covering nonlinear elliptic eigenvalue problems and quasilinear elliptic problems using techniques amalgamated from a range of sophisticated nonlinear analysis domains, the work is suitable for PhD and other early career researchers seeking solutions to nonlinear differential equations. Although an advanced work, the book is self-contained, requiring only graduate-level knowledge of functional analysis and topology. Whenever suitable, open problems are stated and partial solutions proposed. The work is accompanied by end-of-chapter problems and carefully curated references. - Builds from functional analysis and operator theory, to nonlinear elliptic systems and control problems - Outlines the evolution of the main ideas of nonlinear analysis and their roots in classical mathematics - Presented with numerous end-of-chapter exercises and sophisticated open problems - Illustrated with pertinent industrial and engineering numerical examples and applications - Accompanied by hundreds of curated references, saving readers hours of research in conducting literature analysis
