Book Description
This part of the ORNL EPR composite report documents last year's design effort in the magnet systems. The discussion covers both the toroidal field (TF) coil system and the poloidal field (PF) coil system. Consideration of coil support structure, cryogenic requirements, and power supplies is included. Particular attention is also paid to the protection scheme of both TF and PF coils. The conductor design is based on forced-flow supercritical helium-cooled cable in conduits. A hybrid system is proposed for the TF coil system. It uses Nb3Sn in the high field region for a designed maximum field of 11 T, and NbTi in the low field region. Conductor stability analysis in the forced-flow scheme is discussed. Coil connection options to obtain desirable current and voltage ratings in PF coils are described. The refined design in the magnet systems is more self-consistent in every respect.

Book Description
The study of the Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor (EPR) has been performed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the Energy Research and Development Administration Division of Magnetic Fusion Energy (ERDA-DMFE) over a two-year period. This second year's work builds integrally upon the earlier efforts. Therefore, the following format has been adopted for this report. Part 1, entitled ''EPR Summary, '' contains a brief discussion of all facets of the work done this year. The technical areas discussed in Part 1 include the Reference Design itself; the underlying plasma engineering base; the supporting technical evaluations in the areas of magnet systems, nuclear engineering, and general engineering; and the major research, development, and demonstration needs that have been identified. Each of these areas is then discussed fully in separate technical memoranda, which have been issued as Parts 2-6. Where appropriate, the essential elements of previous interim reports have been included in order to provide a self-consistent, readable report. These earlier reports, Basic Considerations and Initiation of Studies (ORNL/TM-4853), EPR Scoping Study (ORNL/TM-5038), and EPR Reference Design (ORNL/TM-5042), can be consulted for a more complete discussion of the entire study.

Book Description
In late 1877, Louis Cailletete in France and Raoul Pictet in Switzerland independently succeeded in liquefying oxygen, thereby proving a hypothesis set forth by Antoine Lavoisier nearly 100 years earlier. The theme of the 1977 Cryogenic Engineering Conference "Cryogenics: A Century of Progress-A Chal lenge for the Future" properly commemorated this accomplishment by reviewing some of the noteworthy advances since that time and outlining many advances still to come. Both Volumes 23 and 24 of this series provide a good account of the many contributions that were presented at this conference. The 1977 Cryogenic Engineering Conference was appropriately again held in Boulder, Colorado where the first Cryogenic Engineering Conference was initiated 23 years ago by the late Russell B. Scott, then Chief of the Cryogenic Engineering Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Board is extremely grateful to members of the National Bureau of Standards and the University of Colorado for serving as hosts for this meeting of cryogenic specialists from all over the world. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference is again pleased to have had the International Cryogenic Materials Conference co-host this biennial meeting for the second time in succession. This joint effort again has permitted an in-depth coverage of research on technical materials in areas currently receiving primary attention by the cryogenic engineering community. The Proceedings of the Inter national Cryogenic Materials Conference will be published as Volume 24 of the Advances in Cryogenic Engineering.
