A Substitute for Victory
Author: Rosemary Foot
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 9780801424137
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 294
Book Description
After more than two years of bitter negotiations during which combatants and civilians continued to suffer casualties, the Korean armistice was concluded in July 1953. Focusing on the Americans' formulation of negotiating positions and on their attempts to coordinate political goals with military tactics, Rosemary Foot here charts the tortuous path to peace and offers a new explanation for the agonizing length of the talks. She also takes into account the role of the Western allies and the Indian, South Korean, North Korean, and Chinese governments as she examines the complex international setting in which the armistice took place.

The Rise and Fall of the European Defence Community
Author: K. Ruane
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230599087
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Using the European Defence Community (EDC) as a case-study, this book examines the competing and often conflicting view of the British and American governments towards European integration in the early 1950s. The British, fearing an 'agonizing reappraisal' of the American defence commitment to Europe if the supranational EDC failed, went to great lengths to ensure the success of the scheme. When, despite these efforts, the EDC finally collapsed in August 1954, NATO was plunged into arguably the most severe crisis in its history. The crisis also possessed an Anglo-American dimension, with London and Washington badly divided on how it should be resolved. In the end, the British were instrumental in the creation of the Western European Union as a successor to the EDC. Their crisis management, however, had been rooted in fear of the 'agonizing reappraisal', a danger dismissed by many historians as exaggerated but which the British, in 1954, were perhaps right to take seriously.

The Postwar Transformation of Albuquerque, New Mexico 1945-1972
Author: Robert Turner Wood, PhD
Publisher: Sunstone Press
ISBN: 1611393108
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
From the end of World War II to the closing months of 1972, Albuquerque, New Mexico, underwent as dramatic a transformation as any American city ever has in such a short time. Its population exploded from about 50,000 to more than five times that number, and the median income of its citizens adjusted for inflation doubled. Fundamental changes took place in the character of the city, as the rugged individualism of the people gave way to more cooperative behavior, and authority relaxed throughout the society. Such broad social changes could also be seen in the country at large, but in Albuquerque they transpired more rapidly and vividly. Ex-Governor Clyde Tingley, Pete Domenici before he became a U.S. Senator, County Commission Chairman Dorothy Cline, Chicano activist Reies Tijerina and many others come to life on these pages. Their words and acts have had a continuing impact on the paths the city has followed to the present day.
