This book contains many historic facts about Nottingham. The town began in the 6th century as a small settlement called Snottaingaham. Nottingham was originally a fortified settlement or burgh. The town had a ditch around it and an earth rampart with a wooden palisade on top. In 920 the English king recaptured Nottingham and he built a bridge across the Trent. Nottingham was famous for its Lace during the industrial revolution. Today it is the City of Nottingham.

Book Description
Excerpt from Bygone Nottinghamshire This work, the neatest literary task I have hitherto performed, is uniform with other "Bygone" county histories from the press of my friend William Andrews, F. R. H. S, who, from being a native of Nottinghamshire, has evinced great interest in its publication. This uniformity extends little beyond the title, inasmuch as it the production of one pen alone. To render the work acceptable to the public, I have travelled over a wide field for my subjects; these I have endeavoured to treat without colour from political or other sources; although necessarily epitomised, I claim for them, if they possess no other merit, originality. Where authorities exist they are invariably given; where otherwise, I am personally responsible for the matter. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Nottinghamshire Though the popular Midland Shire, whose county town has a world-wide fame for its textile fabrics, is perhaps better known to-day in the busy world of commerce than in any other sphere, it must not be Supposed that it is deficient in the elements of literary interest or historic dignity. On the contrary, its life-story is one of the most absorbing that can possibly be presented. Since the Norman Conqueror set foot upon Nottingham shire soil, leaving here in undisturbed possession a larger number of King's Thegns than had been permitted to remain in most localities, the county has been the home of powerful people, and the scene of many memorable and stirring events which have had an important in uence on the country's welfare. Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of Old Nottinghamshire The present editor has tried to choose his subjects from a field as varied as possible, and he ventures to think that papers will be found here which will be welcome both on account of the matter to be found in them and because of the novelty of the subject. Nor must it be thought for a moment that the choice of interesting subjects is by any means exhausted. Enough material could easily be found to fill a second and perhaps even a third volume. Book Description
Excerpt from History and Antiquities of Nottingham, Vol. 1 It is not an affected humility, but proceeds from the sincere and deep feeling of my heart, that I acknowledge with gratitude the generous kindness of the subscribers who have enabled me to commence, and carry on to completion, the present work. To their honour I must bear testimony, that the patronage promised before the first sheet was put to press, has been steadily and cheerfully continued to the end. Perhaps a more remarkable example of public candour was never witnessed, than has been shown in the ready reception which this book has met with; for notwithstanding its many imperfections, which I beg explicitly to acknowledge, the number of patrons has gone on so fast increasing, that every disposable copy of the entire edition was sold long before the latter numbers were printed or compiled! Before adverting to the distinguishing characteristics of this work, it is due to their talents and industry, that a grateful acknowledgment should be made of the labours of those distinguished men, by whom I have been preceded, and to whom I am so much indebted. John Rouse, a monk of Warwick, was the first to write a "History of Nottingham," about the year 1500, Leland refers to it, p. 7; it is not now extant, and probably it might have perished in the general destruction of literature that unhappily distinguished the overthrow of the papal authority in England, and the establishment of the Anglican hierarchy in the reign of Henry VIII.
