Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1 Descriptive geometry as taught in the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology is intended to lead to the solution of the graphical problems which ordinarily arise in engineering and architecture; to train the imagination as necessary in these professions; to cultivate the sense of accuracy; and to give facility in drafting and the ability to read working drawings with ease. Consequently this book, an outgrowth of printed notes, treats the subject from the standpoint of the drafts man rather than from that of the mathematician, placing reliance on graphical methods, and omitting analytical methods. Great importance is attached to the drafting exercises which supplement, at the Institute, the use of the book; in these the student works out a set of study plates which give printed data for a large number of original problems and applications. Considerable work in the projection of solids is given in Chapter VII., since the author believes better results will be obtained if, from time to time, some of this work be combined with the study of the problems on the line and plane. It has also been thought best to give problems in all four quadrants, but the book contains a much larger number of examples in the first and third for the benefit of students in architecture and engineering. The author desires to express his obligations for general sug gestions regarding method and scope to Professor Burton, head of the Department of Drawing in the Institute, who has recently studied abroad the methods of teaching descriptive geometry in the Ecole des Beaux - Arts and other French schools. Mr. Harry C. Bradley, of the Institute, has assisted in the many details of preparation; the selection of data for the examples and the making of the drawings are largely his work. Excerpt from Essentials of Descriptive Geometry It may help some instructors who contemplate using the fol lowing text-book to know how the authors have used the book in their classes. With this in View, the following general method for conducting the course is suggested and an outline of lessons given. Each instructor will, no doubt, need to alter the outline to some extent to suit the conditions under which he works. At the University of Wisconsin, descriptive geometry is given as a three credit course for one semester of eighteen weeks. Each week's work consists of one general lecture for all students in the course, one recitation, and two two-hour drafting periods for each section. One of the two-hour draft ing periods is sometimes turned into a one-hour recitation period. At the lecture, the general principles involved in the next lesson are explained, general announcements made, and prob lems assigned for a home plate which is to be handed in at the beginning of the recitation period. At the recitation, the stu dents are drilled in the analyses of the problems and then sent to the black board with some particular problem to solve. Excerpt from Note-Book on Practical Solid or Descriptive Geometry: Containing Problems With Help for Solutions In teaching a large class, if the method of lecturing and demonstrating from the black-board only is pursued, the more intelligent students have generally to be kept back, from the necessity of frequent repetition, for the sake of the less promising; if the plan of setting problems to each pupil is adopted, the teacher finds a difficulty in giving to each sufficient attention. A judicious combination of both methods is doubtless the best, though this is not always easy of attainment in working with numbers - the use of this book may help in accomplishing it. It is suggested that at the beginning of a chapter, and in some cases with each problem, the teacher should give a black-board explanation, carefully pointing out any fresh steps, before sending his pupils to their work. The number of examples in each chapter to be worked out by the student is, of course, left to the teacher's judgment of the progress and requirements of his pupil. The student will here be assisted, it is believed, because he will find help given when necessary, and thus will often be able to go on with his work by himself, with the satisfaction of also feeling that he is progressing systematically. Moreover he will become practised in dealing with written questions - a point not to be lost sight of by those who are preparing for Examinations. The Second Edition has been enlarged by the addition of chapters on the straight line and plane with explanatory diagrams and exercises, on tangent-planes, and on the cases of the spherical triangle.
