Book Description
Titanium Powder Metallurgy contains the most comprehensive and authoritative information for, and understanding of, all key issues of titanium powder metallurgy (Ti PM). It summarizes the past, reviews the present and discusses the future of the science and technology of Ti PM while providing the world titanium community with a unique and comprehensive book covering all important aspects of titanium powder metallurgy, including powder production, powder processing, green shape formation, consolidation, property evaluation, current industrial applications and future developments. It documents the fundamental understanding and technological developments achieved since 1937 and demonstrates why powder metallurgy now offers a cost-effective approach to the near net or net shape fabrication of titanium, titanium alloys and titanium metal matrix composites for a wide variety of industrial applications. Provides a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of the science, technology and industrial practice of titanium powder metallurgy Each chapter is delivered by the most knowledgeable expert on the topic, half from industry and half from academia, including several pioneers in the field, representing our current knowledge base of Ti PM. Includes a critical review of the current key fundamental and technical issues of Ti PM. Fills a critical knowledge gap in powder metal science and engineering and in the manufacture of titanium metal and alloys

Book Description
Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.

Book Description
We have studied the shock wave consolidation of copper, 4330 steel and aluminum+6% silicon powders. We measured the Hugoniots of the unsintered powders using piezoresistive pressure sensors as well as impedance matching techniques and found that they can be well described by available models for pore collapse. An elementary model for the surface heating was developed based on the flux of energy at the interfaces between powder particles during compaction. This model was found to agree quantitatively with observations of localized microstructural modifications in recovered specimens. We found that most of the energy of the compaction shock is deposited at the particle interfaces and that powder particle morphology and specific surface area are important variables. Localized thermal modifications can be either solid state transformations or surface melting and rapid cooling can produce metastable structures. Knowledge of the shock history is essential to the interpretation and control of the consolidated microstructure. We have produced and tested consolidated aluminum+6% silicon that has tensile properties comparable to those of wrought material.

Book Description
This chapter introduces the novel method of mechanochemical synthesis as an effective method for synthesizing metal powders in the nanocrystalline state. After introducing the basic principles of the process, process parameters that affect the constitution and microstructure of the processed powders are discussed. The mechanisms of alloying and grain refinement are also described. Methods for achieving the smallest possible grain size are highlighted. Current problems associated with the consolidation of powders to bulk shape are described. The ubiquitous problem of powder contamination during milling and solutions to eliminate or minimize this are also emphasized.
