Book Description
Excerpt from New America, Vol. 1 of 2 Some studies of past times, which have long occupied my pen, led me last summer to the James River and to Plymouth Rock. I went out in search of an old world, and found a new one. East, west, north, and south, I met with new ideas, new purposes, new methods; in short, with a New America. The men who planted these Free States - doing the noblest work that England has achieved in history - were spurred into their course by two great passions; a large love of Liberty; a deep sense of Religion; and, in our Great Plantation, liberty and religion exercise a power over the forms of social and domestic life unknown at home. In the heart of solid societies and conservative churches, we find the most singular doctrines, the most audacious experiments; and it is only after seeing what kind of forces are at work within them, that we can adequately admire the strength of these societies and churches. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of America, Vol. 1 of 2 IN fulfilling the engagement which I have come under to the public With respect to the History of America, it was my intention not to have published any part of the work until the whole was completed. The present state of the British Colonies has induced me to alter that resolution. While they are engaged in civil war with Great Britain, inquiries and speculations con. Cerning their ancient forms of policy and laws, which exist no longer, can not be interesting. The attention and expectation of mankind are now turn ed tos their future condition. In whatever manner this unhappy con. Test may terminate, a new order of things must arise in North America. And its affairs will assume another aspect. I wait, with the solicitude of a good citizen, until the ferment subsides, and re lav government he reestablish ed, and then I shall return to this art 0 my work, in which I had made some regress. That together vi the history of Portuguese America, and the settlements made by the several nations of Europe in the West India islands, will complete my plan. Book Description
Excerpt from North America, Vol. 1 of 2 Thirty years ago my mother wrote a book about the Americans, to which I believe I may allude as a well known and successful work without being guilty of any undue family conceit. That was essentially a woman's book. She Saw with a woman's keen eye, and described with a woman's light but graphic pen, the social defects and absurdities which our near relatives had adopted into their domestic life. All that she told was worth the telling, and the telling, if done successfully, was sure to produce a good result. I am satisfied that it did so. But she did not regard it as a part of her work to dilate on the nature and operation of those political arrangements which had produced the social absurdities which She saw, or to explain that though such absurdities were the, natural result of those arrangements in their newness, the defects would certainly pass away, while the political arrangements, if good, would remain. Such a work is fitter for a man than for a woman. I am very far from thinking that it is a task which I can perform with satisfaction either to myself or to others. It is a work which some man will do who has earned a right by education, Study, and success to rank himself among the political sages of his age. But I may perhaps be able to add something to the familiarity of. Englishmen with Americans. The writings which have been most popular in England on the subject of the United States have hitherto dealt chiefly with social details; and though in most cases true and useful. Book Description
Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2: 1783-1830 HE story of the United States has frequently been told. It has been told in the spirit of boasting, as a marvel of local accomplishment. It has been told in the spirit of reverence, as the work of a chosen people under a special dispensation of Providence. Its glory has been ascribed now to one political party and now to another. Its success has been attributed to various statesmen and to different sections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 1 The writer has been sparing in making corrections in the received etymology of American names but the start ling absurdity which marks the current explanations of some important ones, such as Titicaca, Cuzco, and Mexico, has led him to indicate what he believes to be their true meaning (pp. 295, 405, which is in each case based upon some early authority.
