Book Description
This volume represents the proceedings of the third in a series of annual inter national symposia. The first, The Neuroregulation of Autonomic, Endocrine, and Immune Systems, was held in Indianapolis in the fall of 1985. The second, Psychological and Biological Approaches to the Understanding of Human Disease, was held in Bielefeld, Germany in the fall of 1986. The theme of this series concerns the communication between the central nervous system and the other major systems of the body, and the purpose is to monitor the frontiers of research into these neuronal/hormonal regulatory interactions and their application to medicine. The present volume deals with the role of peptides and amino acids in these information transfer processes. Great strides have been made in exploring the important role of amino acids and pep tides in neuroregulation, and the ongoing biotechnology revolution promises signi ficant scientific and medical advances throughout the next decade and beyond. The work described in this volume captures the great excitement and pro mise of this biomedical renaissance. This meeting was cosponsored by Searle/ Monsanto and Washington University and held in St. Louis in the early fall of 1986. A major contributor to these proceedings was Dr. Thomas O'Donohue whose chapter deals with his work in characterizing the endogenous ligands for the PCP and sigma opioid receptors. Tom's personality and career personi fied the dedication of this series to the principle of a broad multidisciplinary approach to scientific problems.

Book Description
"The Handbook is intended to be a service to the neuroscience community, to help in finding available and useful information, to point out gaps in our knowledge, and to encourage continued studies. It represents the valuable contributions of the many authors of the chapters and the guidance of the editors and most important, it represents support for research in this discipline. Based on the rapid advances in the years since the second edition."--Publisher's website.

Book Description
The Twelfth Annual Washington Spring Symposium on Health Sciences attracted over 300 scientists from 20 countries. It was held at the Lisner Auditorium of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. during June 1-5, 1992. The theme of the meeting was "Growth Factors, Peptides, and Receptors," and speakers emphasized both basic and clinical research in these areas. The seven plenary sessions emphasized Peptides, Growth Factors, Peptide Receptors, Growth Factor Receptors, Second Messengers, Proliferation, and Clinical Correlations. The chapters in this volume are derived from each of these scientific sessions plus the poster and special sessions. The Abraham White Distinguished Scientist Award was presented to Dr. Solomon H. Snyder for his numerous contributions to the field of neurochemistry. He presented the keynote address "Nitric Oxide: A Novel Neuronal Messenger." Dr. Snyder discussed the pathway of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis by the enzyme NO synthase. Released NO may be responsible for the neuronal toxicity associated with NMDA, an excitatory amino acid analogue. Dr. Snyder noted that NO may be the first of a new class of transmitters, with carbon monoxide being another candidate. The Distinguished Public Service Award was presented to Senator Fritz Hollings in of his leadership and outstanding achievements in the United States Senate recognition and for his legislative support for biomedical research and education. In the symposium banquet address, Senator Hollings stressed the need for continued support of research to combat serious diseases such as cancer.

Book Description
An update of the larger volume on brain peptides published in 1983, the first seven chapters of this book address general areas of relevance to brain peptides, including biosynthesis, structural characterization, recent studies on receptors and enzymatic degradation, and techniques of measurement and analysis and for defining anatomic distribution of peptides. A chapter by Ruth Siegal reveals new developments in in situ hybridization. The second section examines recent developments with respect to specific neuropeptides, including TRH, which has recently been cloned, new findings on cholecystokin, the elucidation of the VIP gene, and two chapters on the enkephalins and other opioid peptides. Also reviewed are the latest findings on the structure and functions of bombesin and GRP, and the brain-angiotensin system. Of particular interest to psychiatrists is the update on peptides and psychiatry. New to this volume is a review of neurotrophic factors.

Book Description
Addresses the regulation, within the brain extracellular fluid, of peptide and amino acid levels, particularly neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Particular attention is devoted to the way in which peptides may either penetrate the blood-brain barrier or alter its permeability to other solutes. Focuses on central nervous system disease, especially in designing drugs and agents which will penetrate the blood-brain barrier and expert central nervous actions. Book Description
The field of neurotrophic factors has witnessed exp- sive growth in the past decade. As is usual in scientific in- vation, this progress has been closely associated with methodological advances. The introduction of molecular b- logical techniques into the neurotrophic factor field led to the discovery of new families of neurotrophic growth f- tors and their receptors. Production of growth factors by recombinant technology played a crucial part. The example of nerve growth factor, the paradigmatic neurotrophic factor, illustrates this point. A decade ago investigators were forced to purify small quantities of this protein from murine salivary glands, but much larger qu- tities of recombinant nerve growth factor are now available for experimentation as well as clinical development. A decade ago there was a controversy about the existence of nerve growth factor in the brain and the immunoassays used for its measurement, but current publications report the precise localization of gene expression for nerve growth factor and its receptor in the brain. Neurotrophic Factors aims at presenting the techniques that have been crucial to the realization of these rapid advances and thus have helped propel the neurotrophic factors field to its current status of high visibility. These techniques range from molecular biological methods used for cloning and production, to cell culture methods for assessing biological activities, to animal models of nervous system injury (nec- sary for the development of therapeutic agents from neurotrophic factors).

Book Description
The world is faced with an epidemic of metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. This is due to changes in dietary habits and the decrease in physical activity. Exercise is usually part of the prescription, the first line of defense, to prevent or treat metabolic disorders. However, we are still learning how and why exercise provides metabolic benefits in human health. This open access volume focuses on the cellular and molecular pathways that link exercise, muscle biology, hormones and metabolism. This will include novel “myokines” that might act as new therapeutic agents in the future.
