Toda conceptualización teórica sobre el relación “Ciudadanía - Nuevas Tecnologías de la Información” apunta, en nuestro tiempo, hacia la emergencia de un nuevo modelo de mediación social marcado por la radical singularidad creativa de sus agentes y por la nueva división internacional de trabajo. Experiencias como el movimiento del 15M en España o Yo soy 132 en México per-miten una lectura crítica del espíritu McBride en la demanda de derechos culturales por parte de las multitudes. Simultáneamente, se reconfigura el ecosistema cultural en torno a las redes de información y conocimiento. En este marco, la teoría crítica de la mediación se ve obligada a definir nuevos anclajes conceptuales y una nueva ecología del saber comunicacional pensada desde el Sur y desde abajo; teniendo presente siempre la importancia de las nuevas tecnologías digitales en los procesos de intercambio y reproducción social, ya que condicionan las formas de participa-ción y convivencia de los ciudadanos. Las redes y el lenguaje común definen nuevas relaciones temporales y espaciales para el sujeto moderno que deben ser repensadas desde una investigación dialógi-ca y una conceptualización abierta, dado que rompen con la continuidad histórica de los medios de comunicación masivos. El presente volumen ofrece al lector una aproximación plural a las nuevas miradas sobre los movimientos sociales, las prácticas autónomas de jóvenes y minorías, la teoría de la ciberdemocracia y las acciones de resistencia del Net Activismo; cues-tionando las visiones al uso sobre la ciudadanía, a fin de tratar de pensar otros modelos conceptuales y posibles alianzas para proyectar una nueva teoría crítica de la mediación acorde con la cultura digital.

Over the past two decades, the way we learn has changed dramatically. We have new sources of information and new ways to exchange and to interact with information. But our schools and the way we teach have remained largely the same for years, even centuries. What happens to traditional educational institutions when learning also takes place on a vast range of Internet sites, from Pokemon Web pages to Wikipedia? This report investigates how traditional learning institutions can become as innovative, flexible, robust, and collaborative as the best social networking sites. The authors propose an alternative definition of “institution” as a “mobilizing network”—emphasizing its flexibility, the permeability of its boundaries, its interactive productivity, and its potential as a catalyst for change—and explore the implications for higher education. The Future of Thinking reports on innovative, virtual institutions. It also uses the idea of a virtual institution both as part of its subject matter and as part of its process: the first draft of the book was hosted on a Web site for collaborative feedback and writing. The authors use this experiment in participatory writing as a test case for virtual institutions, learning institutions, and a new form of collaborative authorship. The finished version is still posted and open for comment. This book is the full-length report of the project, which was summarized in an earlier MacArthur volume, The Future of Learning Institutions in a Digital Age.

Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach
