On this, be divided his foldiers into three divifions, and began a {treet-firing. At the firft fire, the commander of, the Nabob's tr00ps fell, on which all their horfe ga110ped off. Their infan. Try kept up an ill-directed fire from the houfes, which killed and wounded a few men. On hearing the firing, Major Kil patrick marched with a reinforcement to fuftain this party; but the affair was over before he got up. The Nabob. Was now incenfed beyond meafure at the Englifh, who had not only firipped him of all the conquefis he had made, but had invaded his territories with fuccefs, and greatly diltrefl'ed his army, by the deftruétion of his magazines at Houghley and Gongee: he therefore raifed a great army, and was refolved, he, faid, not to leave an Englifhman in his dominions. He had already begun his march from Muxadabad for Calcutta and, foon after the burning of his magazines, he condefcended to write to the Ad miral. This letter the Admiral anfwered with a becoming fpirit. The Nabob did not choofe to make any reply; but con tinued to augment his forces, and draw his army together, and march towards Calcutta. When he thought he had a force.fuf ficient to demand what terms he pleafed, he once morewrote to the Admiral, propofing a negociation, and that the Admiral fhould fend a perfon of fome confequence to treat with him'. The N abob did not wait for a reply to this letter, but marched on. His force was faid to be eighteen thoufand horfe, fifteen thoufand foot, ten thoufand pioneers, about forty thoufand at tendants, fifty elephants, and forty pieces of cannon.
