Reproduction and Pelage Characteristics Related to Scent Marking Behavior in the Eastern Mole (Scalopus Aquaticus Machrinus)

Book Description
The eastern mole ( Scalopus aquaticus ) is not often studied and its behavior in the wild can be difficult to observe directly due to its subterranean lifestyle. I studied scent marking behavior indirectly through observations of pelage staining and whether it is responsible for pelage spotting. In addition, I observed reproductive characteristics associated with the mole such as fluctuation in testes' weight and changes in the condition of the females' reproductive tract during the breeding season. A total of 91 moles were collected from southern Illinois and 152 from Cincinnati, Ohio. For males and females, evidence of scent marking remained the same during breeding and nonbreeding seasons. Adults scent marked more than juveniles. Pelage spotting was not a product of pelage staining. The presence of pelage spots more likely had a genetic basis. The peak breeding period for southern Illinois and Cincinnati occurred in late January and the first half of February when testes reached peak weight. A large majority (66%) of the population died within the first year of life, and after 3 years mortality rates also increased. For every age class, males were approximately 25% larger and heavier than females. Moles reached their adult weight and length within their first year of life.
