This collection of articles by officers of the Indian Army records the contributions of the Army to natural history over a period of more than two hundred years. It builds on the premise that the study of the Indian subcontinent's natural history was more or less the exclusive preserve of these officers. Beginning with the fading years of the eighteenth century, the natural history-inclined officers of the Indian Army studied the flora and fauna, particularly the fauna, in their leisure hours and became experts on it. Their findings were recorded in various journals in the U.K., and after 1886 mainly in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. A valuable feature of this book is a pamphlet (the twenty-fifth article in the collection) sent to the Indian Government by the Army through the Society by Lieutenant Colonel Burton, which drew the attention of the former to the dire need to conserve the country's wildlife, and in due course saw the formation of the Indian Board for Wildlife. The book is thus a tribute to this remarkable aspect of the Indian Army which, apart from fighting in the field, fought a battle to conserve the country's wonderful and almost incomparable natural heritage spread over a zoogeographical area over thirty degrees of latitude encompassing almost every type of climate met with in the world.

This study examines the observations of U.S. military personnel who attended India's Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) at Wellington. Although the DSSC is a tri-service professional military education institution, this study focuses primarily on the Indian Army, the largest and most influentialmilitary service in India. Collectively, U.S. personnel at the DSSC had sustained interactionsover an extended period of time with three distinct groups of Indian Army officers: seniorofficers (brigadier through lieutenant general), senior midlevel (lieutenant colonel and colonel),and junior midlevel (captain and major). The study focuses on the attitudes and values of theIndian Army officer corps over a 38-year period, from 1979 to 2017, to determine if there waschange over time, and if so, to understand the drivers of that change.

This is the first book devoted to the interest taken by amateur British collectors in Indian insects between 1750 and 1947, many employed as soldiers and medics by the East India Company. Initially confined to the building up of personal collections (many of which would later form the foundation of the London Natural History Museum’s collection), the early entomologists also donated specimens to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Bombay Natural History Society and local museums. Some published their findings in the journals of these institutions. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, interest in entomology shifted to focus on insect pests and their economic impact on forestry and horticulture.
