As a result, cotton producers have an important stake in development of new sources of demand for natural fibers. Since the introduction of nonwovens in the thirties, and especially in the postwar era, the market for bonded fiber fabrics has increased rapidly. The new processes have brought increased efficiency in fabric manufacture by eliminating expensive spinning and weaving. Development of nonwoven fabrication has Opened a new market for great quantities of raw materials. If cotton captures a significant share of this market it has a potential for large growth in future sales. Nonwoven fabric production, defined broadly for this study (see p. L), exceeded 1 billion pounds in 1967. Bonded fiber fabrics made up 9.h percent of this total; felts and punched and needled materials, percent; and padding materials, percent. During the last decade, bonded fiber fabrics generated most of the enthusiasm about the dynamic and exciting potential of the nonwoven industry.
