Book Description
This unparalleled resource sets forth the international community's blueprint for worldwide development. Here is one reference source for all of the action plans negotiated since the United Nations' historic "Earth Summit" in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro that established the global and regional priorities necessary to sustain environmentally sound economic and social development. Expert commentary and annotations on the implications - both opportunities for investment and concerns about changes in regulatory regimes - of these international legal policy decisions is featured here. This is the only resource integrating implementation strategies with the Agenda 21 directives, complete with analytical commentary and annotations. This comprehensive work provides expert guidance to the legal instruments framing the strategic objectives for sustainable development. It includes full coverage of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, adopted at the UN World Summit for Sustainable Development (2002), which set the priorities for implementing Agenda 21, the action plan that was adopted at the U.N. Summit for Environment and Development a decade earlier. Here also are the strategic measures for financing these strategic objectives, negotiated at the summit meeting in Monterrey, Mexico. Taken together, these legal instruments comprise the current international action plan that guides the multilateral, bilateral, and national economic development agendas around the world. This invaluable reference is essential for those involved in international trade law, since free trade agreements now contain provisions that mandate negotiations to harmonize environmental and social regulations. Similarly, these agreed policies guide the international programs of the World Bank, regional development banks, and regional integration pacts such as the European Union or the Association of South East Asian Nations. Coverage includes: - Evolving Delivery Mechanisms for a Clear & Urgent Mission (Commentary by Nicholas A. Robinson) - Agenda 21 - Annotated Action Plan - Johannesburg Plan of Implementation - Monterrey Financing Plan - Policy Resolutions and Implementing Measures - Valuable references to Internet sources for national reports submitted to the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development.

Book Description
The IUCN Strategies for Sustainable Development Handbook Series This handbook is one in a series being produced by IUCN and its partners to assist countries and communities implement Agenda 21, the action programme of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The series will include handbooks on national strategies for sustainable development, local strategies, assessing progress towards sustainability, biodiversity action plans, .involving indigenous peoples, and on integrating population and resource use planning; and regular companion volumes of case studies addressing the key issues of concern to strategy implementation. Many international agreements and action plans now call for countries to undertake national strategies. These strategies seek to involve communities in united approaches to sustainable development. Some are sectoral, such as tropical forest strategies, others are thematic, covering topics such as biodiversity, education or climate change. Still others, such as national conservation strategies and national environment action plans, are evolving to become more comprehensive processes, drawing together economic, social and environmental development actions. This handbook is for people involved in strategies. It draws on experiences in different regions of the world to present options and examples of the role of strategies in sustainable development. Book Description
In 1992, world leaders adopted Agenda 21, the work program of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development. This landmark event provided a political foundation and action items to facilitate the global transition toward sustainable development. The international community marked the tenth anniversary of this conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. Down to Earth, a component of the U.S. State Department's "Geographic Information for Sustainable Development" project for the World Summit, focuses on sub-Saharan Africa with examples drawn from case-study regions where the U.S. Agency for International Development and other agencies have broad experience. Although African countries are the geographic focus of the study, the report has broader applicability. Down to Earth summarizes the importance and applicability of geographic data for sustainable development and draws on experiences in African countries to examine how future sources and applications of geographic data could provide reliable support to decision-makers as they work towards sustainable development. The committee emphasizes the potential of new technologies, such as satellite remote-sensing systems and geographic information systems, that have revolutionized data collection and analysis over the last decade.

Book Description
Both Agenda 21 and the IUCN's Caring for the Earth recommend that every country should prepare and implement a National Sustainable Development Strategy, in order to mobilize and focus the country's efforts to achieve sustainability. This text demonstrates how the task can be approached. Using existing Environmental Action Plans, National Conservation Plans and individual sectoral plans, it shows how strategies need to adopt a participatory process if they are to work successfully.
