Book Description
When Marc Ashton was kidnapped, thoughts of his famous father, Horace Dade Ashton, filled his mind. The elder Ashton became a founding member of the Explorers Club, and showed his passion for adventure by visiting many perilous, yet captivating, corners of the world at a time when travel was not easy. Marc believed the key to his escape lay in his father’s exploits. Dubbed the “original Indiana Jones,” the elder Ashton shared his journeys through his countless lectures, films, prize-winning photographs, and writing. In 1940, he became the cultural attaché to the U.S. embassy in Haiti and moved his young family to the island, where they remained until 2001. The Spirit of Villarosa is a glorious account of Horace Ashton’s remarkable adventures juxtaposed with Marc Ashton’s own harrowing captivity by armed, drug-crazed thugs seeking a staggering ransom. The Spirit of Villarosa would make an exciting adventure novel; because it’s a true story makes it all the more exhilarating.

Book Description
New York Times Bestseller: A Chicago PI trying to help her elderly neighbors ends up tangled in politics and a murder in this “fast-paced, complicated mystery” (New York Daily News). V.I. “Vic” Warshawski and her neighbor share responsibility for a currently pregnant dog—but Mr. Contreras complains that her detective work keeps her too busy to help with little Peppy. Still, that doesn’t stop him from adding more to her plate by asking her to investigate the disappearance of his friend, a fellow retiree. At the same time, Vic’s trying to look out for a vulnerable eighty-year-old down the street whose property is considered an eyesore by the newcomers gentrifying the neighborhood. When Mr. Contreras’s friend turns up dead in a canal, and the old lady on the block winds up in the hospital, Vic is swept into a world of organized labor, money, and politics—and discovers a distressing personal connection to the case. Vic may not always succeed as a guardian angel—but when things go wrong, she can chase down the demons—in this suspenseful novel from the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master and “crime-fiction pro” (People). “Paretsky’s emphasis on character comes at no expense of action: Vic’s investigation is as physical as it is mental, taking her inside Chicago’s industrial world and up against bad guys who use everything from bats to heavy machinery to thwart her. Among today’s PIs, nobody comes close to Warshawski.” —Publishers Weekly “The richest and most engaging yet of Ms. Paretsky’s thrillers.” —The New York Times “Densely textured, adroitly plotted.” —Kirkus Reviews “One monster of a plot.” —Booklist

Book Description
In the mid-21st century, newborns in the United States are legally required to befitted with a “cyber,” an electronic device that has successfully slashed crime rates by changing the thought patterns of the people who have them. In Canada, however, cybers are still illegal. Max Wilson, the first man to successfully have his cyber surgically removed, has settled in Canada, seeking a new life and joining the fight to have the law changed in the United States. With Dr. Warren Alston, who removed his cyber and is now teaching other surgeons how to do so as well, he becomes part of an operation to smuggle devices into the US that disable cybers without surgery. Meanwhile, Patrick Kobayashi, the inventor of the cyber, is taking an active part in Canada’s election campaign in support of Richard Lane, a maverick politician intent on introducing the cyber into the Canadian landscape, against his own party’s wishes. When a mysterious man calling himself “Guardian Angel” begins threatening Dr. Alston and others trying to stop the spread of the cyber, things take an ominous turn. As efforts redouble in Canada and the United States to stop the insidious threat of the cyber, which the shocking case of one little girl shows may have horrible side effects, the mysterious Guardian Angel resorts to murder and attempted murder. The freedom of individuals to think their own thoughts hangs in the balance as events race to a frightening conclusion.

Book Description
What is that voice in your mind that is trying to guide you to make the right choice? Why have you survived events in your life that should have taken your life? My Guardian Angel approaches its reader on many levels: On a personal level, it is a story of a series of real life events that turned a boy into a man. On a spiritual level, it is a testament of a person's faith in God's promise in Psalm 91, and how that person has made God real in his life. On an entertainment level, the stories are simply humanly emotional, in that some are funny, some are suspenseful, some are sad, and some are happy. We all have stories about our life. We share them around the dinner table, on the front porch or back deck, in the fishing boat, around the camp fire, or maybe at work. Sometimes those moments bring about a story of confession that ends up answering a lifelong family mystery. Sometimes one of those stories might reveal something about you that nobody knows.

Book Description
Where Is All My Relation? presents the first sustained academic discussion of the poetry, pottery, and culture of David Drake, an antebellum slave who distinguished himself by composing verse on the ceramics he produced in the years leading up to the Civil War. During the 1830s, 40s, and 50s, he incised couplets and signatures (a singular "Dave") onto the incredibly large storage vessels that he made. In fact, his stoneware pots and jars are among the largest made in North America during the antebellum era, and craft enthusiasts and appraisers are still proclaiming their precision and ambitious volume. Rich with biblical allusions, historical facts, and personal opinions, his art provides unique insights into the lives of slaves, craftsmen, and the culture of the American South in the first half of the nineteenth century. The essays here engage with the historical context and major issues that Drake's work provokes, among them: prohibitions against slave literacy; Drake's privileged status compared to other slaves at the time; the interpretive status of his material craft objects; the influence of contemporary African American poet George Moses Horton; and Drake's ability to sell his pottery despite the fact that slaves were not officially permitted to participate in a cash economy. Featuring essays by literary critics, art-historians, archaeologists, and curators, Where Is All My Relation? provides a window into the world of nineteenth century material culture and expands our traditional understanding of the slave-narrative genre.
