Book Description
Mende Nazer lost her childhood at age twelve, when she was sold into slavery. It all began one horrific night in 1993, when Arab raiders swept through her Nuba village, murdering the adults and rounding up thirty-one children, including Mende. Mende was sold to a wealthy Arab family who lived in Sudan's capital city, Khartoum. So began her dark years of enslavement. Her Arab owners called her "Yebit," or "black slave." She called them "master." She was subjected to appalling physical, sexual, and mental abuse. She slept in a shed and ate the family leftovers like a dog. She had no rights, no freedom, and no life of her own. Normally, Mende's story never would have come to light. But seven years after she was seized and sold into slavery, she was sent to work for another master-a diplomat working in the United Kingdom. In London, she managed to make contact with other Sudanese, who took pity on her. In September 2000, she made a dramatic break for freedom. Slave is a story almost beyond belief. It depicts the strength and dignity of the Nuba tribe. It recounts the savage way in which the Nuba and their ancient culture are being destroyed by a secret modern-day trade in slaves. Most of all, it is a remarkable testimony to one young woman's unbreakable spirit and tremendous courage.

Book Description
This fresh new approach to African-American theology brings two creative theologians into a lively dialogue between womanist and XodusÓ thought. Karen Baker-Fletcher writes from the perspective of womanism, reflecting the interlocking issues of sex, class, and race, that characterize the experience of African-American women. Garth KASIMU Baker-Fletcher writes from the perspective of what he has termed Xodus theology. With a name that resonates with reference both to the Exodus story, the Cross, and the self-naming identity of Malcolm X, Xodus reflects the perspective of a new generation of Black theology by males who have responded, among other things, to the challenges of womanist theology. In successive chapters based on core themes of theology, each author lays out his or her position. They then engage in mutual critique and dialogue. Both authors draw widely on the Bible and traditional theology, as well as incorporating elements from both African and African-American religious and cultural expression - from the novels of Toni Morrison and Alice Walker to rap and hip-hop. 'My Sister, My Brother' weaves a bright theological tapestry that integrates female and male experience, traditional and contemporary perspectives, in an African-American theology that promotes survival, resistance, healing, liberation, and transcendence. CONTENTS: Part I God: God as Spirit and Strength of Life; Xodus Intuitions of the Divine. Part II Christ: Immanuel, Jesus as Dust and Spirit; Jesus, the Scandal of a God with a Body. Part III Humanity: Xodus Anthropology; Womanhood, A Way of Being Human. Part IV Generations: Unto All Generations; Unto the Fathers' Fathers. Part V Church: Spirit-Church; Having Church.Ó Part VI: Last Things: Future Now! Xodus Eschatology; Dust to Dust, Spirit to Spirit. A Womanist Eschatology.

Book Description
"Adelaide Mannheim and her slave Rachel share a shameful secret. Adelaide's father, a Jewish planter in Cass County, Georgia, is Rachel's father, too. Adelaide marries neighboring planter Henry Kaltenbach, a Jew deeply troubled by slavery, and watches with a wary eye as her husband treats all of his slaves--including Rachel---with kindness. As the country's conflict over slavery looms ever larger, Henry and Rachel fall in love, and as the United States is rent by the Civil War, the lives of mistress and slave are torn apart. When the war brings destruction and Emancipation, can these two women, made kin by slavery, free themselves of the past to truly become sisters?"--

Book Description
PREFACE MY SISTERS VEIL(a poem) Tonis Veil: A beautiful face is never enough To guarantee love, success, and trust. Torn and conflicted by what they see and say Maybe theyre right Its better their way. They always win, So of course we would choose To perpetrate a look That will never lose. Ill just take it to the twelfth degree So it appears self righteously To be me. So bury the mirror, And who you really see. And bury the hatred Of who you really be. Then its easy to forget the grief And promise yourself You can become A respectable Thief! Terris Veil: Restless and young With nothing to lose. Thrown into your world Unblemished, unbruised. Ready to grow, and trust and learn, But guns fill your hands before you discern The value of life, community and respect A simple way to mask your intellect. Apprentice of self-destruction, A king with no crown Frustrated and confused, By the systematic run around. Yet a gnarly lesson awaits to prove Its by your own hand You win or you lose! Tinas Veil: Abandoned and ashamed Afraid and unloved I hid my pain As innocently as a dove. The Lord answers prayers So invisible Ill be cause my blllack and nappy Embarrasses thee. If only but For a genuine veil, Id lose myself In self-medicated hell. But no need to worry, No need to fret Their yaki hair and blue contacts Are easy to get. Spare not a dime For value and worth Designer labels and gold To our pride gives birth. So strut on high, and lively, and proud As you die slowly With a legacy Broken and loud!
