Book Description
The evolution of roadside hardware in the past has been largely dictated by changes to crash testing guidelines rather than observed field performance. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Web-Only Document 332: Multi-State In-Service Performance Evaluations of Roadside Safety Hardware develops a unified format and nationally compatible "in-service performance evaluation" (ISPE) methodology employing various individual state database parameters. The document is supplemental to NCHRP Research Report 1010: In-Service Performance Evaluation: Guidelines for the Assembly and Analysis of Data.

Book Description
"An "in-service performance evaluation" (ISPE) examines roadside safety features while roads are in service. A database of crashes is generally the minimum resource necessary for conducting an ISPE. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 1010: In-Service Performance Evaluation: Guidelines for the Assembly and Analysis of Data presents uniform criteria for conducting ISPEs of both permanent and temporary safety features. Supplemental to the report are NCHRP Web-Only Document 332: Multi-State In-Service Performance Evaluations of Roadside Safety Hardware, which documents the development of the guidelines and the entire research effort; the ISPE Data Set and Analysis Template, a spreadsheet tool to aid in the calculations of each evaluation measure shown in this report and to support the documentation of an ISPE; Implementation of Research Findings and Products, a plan that identifies mechanisms and channels for implementing this research; and a presentation that summarizes the project." -- from publisher's website

Book Description
" In 2014, 54 percent of traffic fatalities in the United States occurred as a result of a vehicle's leaving the roadway, according to U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) data. Roadside safety hardware, such as guardrails, is meant to reduce the risk of a serious crash when leaving the roadway. But in the last several years, a number of serious injuries and deaths resulted from crashes into roadside safety hardware. GAO was asked to review FHWA's oversight framework for roadside safety hardware. This report assesses: (1) how FHWA performs oversight of state policies and practices related to roadside safety hardware; (2) the laboratory crash-testing process and FHWA's oversight of this process; and (3) the extent to which information is available on roadside safety hardware's performance once installed. GAO reviewed federal and state policies, surveyed state DOTs and received 44 responses, and reviewed documentation from nine U.S. crash test labs. "

Book Description
"The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.
