Book Description
The New York Times Bestseller Set in the Appalachian wilderness and blending legends and folklore with high suspense, this stellar novel, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, is considered one of McCrumb's crowning achievements. In 1833 Frankie Silver was an eighteen-year-old girl convicted of murder in Burke County, North Carolina. Through a detailed investigation, the local sheriff, and soon all the townsfolk, discover reason to question her guilt---but the wheels of justice were mercilessly unstoppable, and she was hanged. Now, more than a century later, another woman is convicted of murder in the lush hills of Tennessee. Her life is in the hands of Spencer Arrowood, a man who begins to discover that the convictions of these two women have deep and haunting parallels. Although Frankie's fate cannot be changed, there is still time to alter the fate of another innocent woman. In a voice that could only be Sharyn McCrumb's, the worlds of these two murders, these two women, intersect in this densely plotted and lyrical novel—and characters, generations, and history are breathlessly painted against an Appalachian canvas.

Book Description
In 2003, Leon Fink published his oral history of Guatemalan and Mexican migrants in Morganton, North Carolina, and their fight for unionization in a poultry processing plant. In the following years, Fink remained in touch with many of the people he profiled in the book, and in 2022 he returned to Morganton to interview them and talk with their children, new migrants in the area, and community leaders, particularly women. Their conversations covered a wide range of topics, including labor struggles and victories, grassroots and electoral political organizing, social activism (especially on issues affecting undocumented migrants), class mobility for second-generation migrants, and new cooperative worker-owned institutions, including a bookstore, a textile factory, and a preschool. This revised and expanded edition of The Maya of Morganton reveals what Fink found on his return to Morganton, documenting two decades of continuity and change in a new preface and chapter. Together, the new and original material present a comprehensive yet intimate examination of the migrant experience in western North Carolina.

Photographer Charles W. Thomas beautifully captures images that portray the joy, aspiration, remembrance, and resilience that characterize Black philanthropy. Pairing photographic portraiture and narrative, Charles and Valaida give the reader over 160 artful page spreads that enliven the soul of philanthropy and honor the legacy of America¿s Black philanthropists. Book Description
Broughton Hospital is a product of history, and to follow its story is to discover an engaging tale about the dramatic changes in public mental health services and treatments in the United States and North Carolina. Today, Broughton is facing another chapter in its 134 year history as it prepares to move into a new facility only a few hundred yards from its original campus. Beyond this exciting event, a proposed 10-year "Broughton District Master Plan" envisions a project of 800 acres involving the City of Morganton, County of Burke, other state agencies and a western N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, a two-year residential high school to compliment the NCSSM in Durham. With all of this happening around the old Broughton Hospital and the new Broughton Hospital, one can only guess what the future holds for its continuing, outstanding service to some of the most needy people in North Carolina. "Insanity is a disease to be treated in a hospital and is in no sense a crime for which the sick man is to be sent to a prison.... Let us get rid of this idea and remember that the insane are persons with a tangible disease. -- Dr. Patrick L. Murphy, 1890
