Neither are the extracts herein contained always of importance in themselves. My intention has been merely to give to lovers of literature and especially to lovers of Mon taigne some indications of his influence as shown in later writers. My selections have not been sought out by me; they have presented themselves one after another in the course of the many years during which I have been interested in the subject.
