His first wife was a Holstein lady, Ernestine von Staffeldt by name, whose acquaintance he had made during a visit which, at the close of his Oxford career, he paid to an English friend named Selby, who was married to a Baroness von Brockdorff, and lived in the neighourhood of Kiel.
