Hot-atom chemistry is a unique field of chemistry dealing with highly excited chemical species resulting from nuclear reactions or radioactive decay processes. Modern hot-atom chemistry includes a broad range of disciplines such as fundamental studies from physical chemistry of gas-phase energetic reactions to inorganic solid-state chemistry, as well as recent practical applications in life sciences and energy-related research. In spite of the importance of hot-atom chemistry and its appli cations, its relevance to the other fields of chemistry and related disciplines has attracted little attention and only books and review articles for dedicated hot-atom chemists have been published to date. In this volume, we illustrate the essential aspects of modern hot-atom chemistry for non-specialists, with considerable emphasis on its applications in the related fields. We sincerely hope that this volume can promote mutual understanding and collaboration between hot-atom chemists and researchers in other disciplines. After a brief introduction (Chap. 1) the 2nd chapter gives the non-specialist an idea of experimental techniques commonly used for the production and analysis of hot chemical species. In Chap. 3, we have explained the concepts of hot-atom reac tions in gas, liquid and solid phases with typical examples rather than a comprehensive review of the literature. In view of the current state of accomplishment, the greater part of this chapter is concerned with gas phase studies. Regarding the solid-phase hot atom chemistry, we have confined ourselves only to introducing new concepts and discussing modern aspects.

Molecular stereochemistry is a fundamental aspect of all areas of chemistry. It is especially important in inorganic chemistry where the coordination numbers are variable and occasionally quite high. The present book evolved naturally from a series of articles written by Professor Kepert for Progre88 in Inorganic Ohemi8try, elucida ting aspects of the stereochemistry of inorganic compounds of co ordination numbers 4-12. In the present volume, Professor Kepert has added new sections and synthesized these individual chapters into a unified treatment, updating his references when necessary to the most recent contributions in the literature, and inter weaving the various themes as deemed appropriate. The result is a major contribution, describing the stereochemistry of coordi nation compounds having both unidentate and multidentate ligands. The viability of the repulsion approach to stereochemistry is tested to the limit in this treatise and shown to be an extremely good way of rationalizing a diverse body of data.

In recent years, a number of textbooks on forensic science have been published, most of them directed to two groups, viz. the students of forensic science, and the customers so to say, (prosecutors, police officers, judges, defense lawyers). In this book, while covering fundamental concepts, we try to go a little further and address also active workers in the field of forensic chemistry. This is mainly achieved by relatively nu merous literature references. We hope that they may assist the forensic chemist in penetrating further into the subjects covered in this volume. At the end of most chapters there are examples of actual cases handled at the Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science. Many of these cases could, no doubt, have been investigated in greater detail, but they reflect the compromises often necessary for achieving a reasonable turnover. Some parts of the book are quite strongly colored by the personal opinions of the authors. We felt that these passages will give a little more life to the text than in other treatises of a more objective, but possibly duller character. The authors welcome all constructive criticism which will help to improve the book, should there be a second edition.

The field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has developed at a fascinating pace during the last decade. It always has been an extremely valuable tool to the organic chemist by supplying molecular "finger print" spectra at the atomic level. Unfortunately the high resolution achievable in liquid solutions could not be obtained in solids and physicists and physical chemists had to live with unresolved lines open to a wealth of curve fitting procedures and a vast amount of speculations. High resolution NMR in solids seemed to be a paradoxon. Broad structure less lines are usually encountered when dealing with NMR in solids. Only with the recent advent of mUltiple pulse, magic angle, cross-polarization, two-dimen sional and multiple-quantum spectroscopy and other techniques during the last decade it became possible to resolve finer details of nuclear spin interactions in solids. I have felt that graduate students, researchers and others beginning to get involved with these techniques needed a book which treats the principles, theo retical foundations and applications of these rather sophisticated experimental techniques. Therefore I wrote a monograph on the subject in 1976. Very soon new ideas led to the developement of "two-dimensional spectroscopy" and "multiple-quantum spectroscopy", topics which were not covered in the first edition of my book. Moreover an exponential growth of literature appeared in this area of research leaving the beginner in an awkward situation of tracing back from a current article to the roots of the experiment.

The lecture notes presented in this volume were developed over a period of time that originated with the investigation of a research problem, the distortion from NiAs-type to MnP-type, the group-theoretical implications of which were investigated in collaboration with Professors F. Jellinek and C. Haas of the Laboratory for Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Groningen during the 1973-1974 year. This distortion provides the major example that is worked through in the notes. The subject matter of the notes has been incorporated in part in the lectures of a course in Solid State Chemistry taught several times at Iowa State University, and formed the basis of a series of lectures presented at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart during 1981- 19821 and as part of a Solid State Chemistry course taught during the spring of 1982 at Arizona State University in Tempe.
