Previous DIII-D experiments that induced a D flow in the scrap-off layer (SOL) showed that this flow increased the divertor concentration of extrinsically injected impurities (neon, argon). These impurity fueling and exhaust (or puff and pump) experiments raise a number of modeling issues: the effect of edge-localized modes (ELMs) in regulating impurity core accumulation; the particle balance of the extrinsic impurities; the relation between divertor and plenum enrichment; and the effect of features unique to the present DIII-D Advanced Divertor configuration, specifically, the localized back-conductance of D2 and impurities from the baffle plenum in the outboard divertor region. To aid in understanding the relations between these processes, models have been improved: for core impurity transport to include ELM effects, and for divertor models to treat helium, neon, and argon transport with DIII-D--specific configuration effects. The models have been used to analyze a series of experiments in which neon and argon were first continuously injected (in the divertor private flux region) for 1.5 s, and then exhausted by the DIII-D cryopumping system. Deuterium was puffed at rates of 80 Torr L/s and 150 Torr L/s from the midplane and the divertor private region in these experiments. Results of the simulations are given.

The dynamics of particle flows in the DIII-D tokamak for two divertor configurations is considered. Fuel and intrinsic carbon impurity flows are analyzed using experimental data and 2D fluid plasma simulations. The flows in puff and pump experiments done in an open and a closed divertor geometry are described. It is shown that the flow of fuel particles is sensitive to divertor geometry. The pumping efficiency of the DIII-D cryopumps is a factor of 2 higher in a closed geometry than an open. The core refueling rate of an open divertor is a factor of 2 higher than that of a closed divertor. In contrast, the flow of impurity carbon particles is insensitive to divertor geometry. Both the core carbon content and the fraction of the carbon source which penetrates to the core is unchanged between an open and closed divertor. In addition, the core impurity content is found to be insensitive to the amplitude of gas puffing in the simulations.

Atomic and molecular processes play an important role in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas for a wide range of conditions, and determine, in part, their electrical, transport, thermal, and radiation properties. The study of these and other plasma properties requires a knowledge of the cross sections, reaction rate coefficients, and inelastic energy transfers for a variety of collisional reactions. In this review, we provide quantitative information about the most important collision processes occurring in hy drogen, helium, and hydrogen-helium plasmas in the temperature range from 0. 1 eV to 20 keY. The material presented here is based on published atomic and molecular collision data, theoretical calculations, and appro priate extrapolation and interpolation procedures. This review gives the properties of each reaction, graphs of the cross sections and reaction rate coeffiCients, and the coefficients of analytical fits for these quantities. We present this information in a form that will enable researchers who are not experts in atomic physics to use the data easily.
