Book Description
The collapse of previous command economic structures in Eastern Europe has led to an often chaotic reorganization of transport operations. Southeastern Europe in particular not only lags behind the western EU countries in terms of transport infrastructure, but also in terms of management and policy. However, despite this, or perhaps even because there are no long-standing established patterns, this region is a fertile territory for innovation. Based on the first major international conference dealing with transport issues in Southeastern Europe, this edited volume brings together key researchers and policy makers to discuss and critically analyse these innovations. Focusing on issues related to privatization and harmonization of national legislation, the contributors also address the countries' struggle with inadequate management structures and the challenges posed in running shipping, ports and railways in a region fragmented into numerous nations and states. It not only provides an up-to-date overview of transport operations and planning in Southeastern Europe, but also provides more general insights into recent and current developments in a region that has undergone widespread upheavals in the past two decades, and is now experiencing renewed growth.

Book Description
Fundamental changes are taking place in Europe - demographic, economic, technological and lifestyles. Barriers are coming down and the EC 12 are likely to increase in number, making Europe the largest free trade area in the world. Transport will have a key role in achieving greater unification in Europe. This book takes a Europe-wide perspective in presenting transport by the different modes of travel. This contextual part is then balanced with extensive reviews of the policy issues and challenges facing decision makers - these include missing transport networks, the issue of sustainability, peripheral countries, regulatory reforms, links with Central and East European countries, finance and investment. Finally, a comparison is made with the USA. The book brings together 22 authors from 16 different countries, and this unique combination of international authors gives an authoritative overview of transport. It provides a definitive view of the main transport issues in Europe and analyses the main challenges facing decision makers at all levels.

Book Description
Trans-European networks (TENs) are a key theme in the process of integration for the EU as it enters the next millennium. The attainment of these networks stretches across many different areas of European policy and economy. The development of TENs is about establishing a series of infrastructure networks that complement the broad changes in the European economy facilitated by the development of the Single European Market. The book examines the development of TENs in the three key sectors: transport, energy and telecommunications, noting key themes and issues that need to be faced in their attainment. Attention is also paid to common problems in their realisation most notably the financing problems. The EU's strategy to develop these networks is essentially market-led yet, as the financing issues indicate, a consensus between the states in allowing commercial investment in infrastructure is proving elusive.
