Book Description
As a number of governments have assigned a high priority to the review andselected rationalization of their holdings of public corporations, Canadianshave come to appreciate the importance of understanding the extent andconsequences of government involvement in business. In initiating thisstudy it was the view of the Economic Council of Canada that they couldmake a unique contribution based on the broad perspective they could bringto bear on the important issues. Examining federal as well as provincialenterprises, mixed along with wholly-owned enterprises, and publiccorporations that are monopolies as well as those that operate incompetitive sectors, has indeed provided a useful vantage point from whichto observe the strengths and limitations of government ownership. Thisstudy develops a general framework for the evaluation of publicenterprise. It draws on evidence from various sectors to develop an understanding of the features of public enterprise and of the roles forwhich it is reasonable to employ this public policy instrument. Itanalyses the issue of accountability and control by attempting to explorethe links between the question of control and the role which publicenterprises are expected to fulfil.

Book Description
Janice MacKinnon became minister of Finance for the province of Saskatchewan in 1993, under NDP Premier Roy Romanow, just as the province became the first casualty of the debt and deficit crises that dominated both provincial and federal politics throughout the decade. Minding the Public Purse is a unique mixture of political memoir and policy analysis. An insider's account of how Saskatchewan avoided fiscal catastrophe, it reveals the dynamics of the federal-provincial finance ministers' meetings that saw the rise of Paul Martin and his radical transformation of Canada's finances. MacKinnon, Canada's first female finance minister, provides keen observations on how personalities and shared regional perspectives cut across party affiliations in the evolution of federal-provincial deliberations on managing the debt crisis. Although initially opposed to the radical cuts and downloading unilaterally imposed by the federal minister of Finance in his 1995 budget, she now argues that they were essential and analyses how they have irrevocably transformed the Canadian federation. MacKinnon provides a timely analysis of the implications of the fiscal crisis for the future of medicare and Canada's other social programs and shows why politicians must involve the Canadian public in an open and frank debate about the challenges and choices facing the nation.

Book Description
“The maverick’s way of conducting business forswears the leader as commanding general; it rejects the practice of top-down, authoritative command. Rather, it proposes the leader as catalyst, conscience, and inspirer . . . The true leader sees his job as setting an environment in which new ideas can emerge that neither he nor any other individual anticipated. That leap of imagination, that moment of genuine creativity, can only be inspired by a leader who encourages exploration and shows a willingness to consider a totally new approach.” --from Mind Your Own Business The corporate misdeeds of self-serving executives during the high-octane economy of the 1990s have forced many people to rethink the qualities that make a strong leader. For sixty years, Sidney Harman, the chairman and CEO of the world’s premier manufacturer of high-end audio equipment, has stood apart from the crowd, building his business the old-fashioned way, by satisfying customers and, in doing so, making a healthy profit. His refreshingly employee-centric, bottoms-up approach to business is the secret of Harman International’s continuing success. In Mind Your Own Business, Harman shares his visionary ideas about leadership, providing a welcome contrast to the bad behavior of business leaders recently dominating the news. Harman focuses on creating a culture of personal responsibility throughout his company. He likens his top management team to a jazz quartet that listens to and improvises with one another to create harmony. He stresses the need to do more for workers at every level because employees are the company’s most valuable asset. At Harman International, he has established in-house classrooms to teach English, basic math, health, and music, and encourages his employees to pursue their potential. Now a hale and healthy eighty-five, Harman thinks that “an idea a day” is more important than the proverbial apple and that the key to a long life is a restless curiosity. In the bestselling tradition of Max DePree’s Leadership Is an Art, Mind Your Own Business is a frank, no-nonsense guide for those who want to bring strength, vitality, and values to their businesses—and to their lives.

The original edition of this bestselling and country-changing book. Beginning in the 1970s, Canada abandoned its historical foundations and fell under the spell of socialism. He deals with such topics as the great welfare ripoff; the waste in foreign aid giveaways; radical feminism's attack against the family; the mediocrity of the health-care system; and the politicization of the church.
