The RAC MiG-35/D multirole combat aircraft emerged in 2007 as a land based variant of the Unified Fighter Family based on the MiG-29K/KUB naval optimised multirole combat aircraft contracted by the Indian Navy. The MiG-35/D builds on the capabilities of the MiG-29K/KUB and its land based analogue, the MiG-29M/M2, by introducing a number of fifth generation targeting and navigation systems. The introduction of Omni-directional nozzles for the engines will allow the aircraft, like its rivals from Sukhoi, the Su-30MKI series and the Su-35S, to truly enter the realm of 'super-manoeuvrable' flight. This volume briefly outlines the aircraft design lineage - the first generation MiG-29, and briefly covers the evolution of the Unified Fighter Family of MiG-29K/KUB/MiG-29M2 before moving over to the MiG-35/D which is described in detail. The weapons cleared for the MiG-35/D are described while appendices include specifications on the MiG-35/D and its forebears. All technical information used in this volume regarding the aircraft, systems and weapons has been furnished by the respective design houses, as has the majority of the photographs and diagrams supporting the text.

The continued existence of the Russian defence and arms industry (OPK) was called into question following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Industry experts cited the lack of a domestic market, endemic corruption, and excess capacity within the industry as factors underpinning its predicted demise. However, the industry’s export customers in China, India and Iran during those early years became the OPK’s saving grace. Their orders introduced hard currency back into the industry and went a long way to preventing the forecasted OPK collapse. Although pessimistic predictions continued to plague the OPK throughout the 1990s, the valuable export dollars provided the OPK the breathing space it needed to claw back its competitive advantage as an arms producer. That revival has been further underpinned by a new political commitment, various research and development initiatives, and the restoration of defence industry as a tool of Russian foreign policy. The short-term future of the Russian OPK looks promising. The rising domestic defence order is beginning to challenge the export market as the OPK’s most important customer. Meanwhile, exports will be safeguarded by continued foreign demand for niche Russian defence products. Although the long-term future of the OPK is more difficult to predict, Russia’s solid research and development foundation and successful international joint military ventures suggest that the current thriving trend in exports is likely to continue. Russia represents the next generation of affordable and rugged military equipment for the arsenals of the developing world. Coupled with Russia’s growing ability to rearm itself through higher oil prices and a more streamlined defence industry, the future of the OPK looks bright.

Designed as a mass-produced and relatively cheap light tactical fighter, the MiG-29 first flew on October 6, 1977. After extensive flight testing, it entered production in 1982 and deliveries to the Soviet Air Force began in 1983. In addition to its main counter-air role, the aircraft had a useful air-to-ground capability, carrying free-fall bombs and unguided rockets. From the outset the MiG-29 had been steadily developed beyond the fourth generation with changes to the airframe, avionics and weapons systems and new variants were produced in the early 2000s. The MiG-29 known as the Fulcrum in the west, became both one of the Soviet Air Force's main fighter types and a successful Soviet export with nearly a third of the 1,500 first-generation Fulcrums built up to 1996 being exported.
