Book Description
MicroRNAs (miRNA) are tiny bits of genetic material that were unknown nearly 10 years ago but now represent an exciting field of study in biology. Upon their discovery, researchers revealed for the first time a new mechanism by which microRNA can stop the function of messenger RNA (mRNA) by literally cutting it in half, interfering with the normal function of specific messenger RNAs in gene expression. This "expression" of genes that code for essential proteins is essentially what controls whether a cell turns into a liver, lung, or brain cell, for example. Understanding what activates this process - or stops it - is a key to understanding the biological process and builds a foundation for advances in medicine and other fields. This volume in Methods in Enzymology presents valuable methods for studying MicroRNA, with three sections covering identification of MicroRNAs and their targets; MicroRNA expression, maturation and functional analysis; and MicroRNAs and disease.

Book Description
This book examines applications of multi-omics approaches for understanding disease etiology, pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions. It also analyzes the genetics, immunological and metabolic mechanisms underlying the infections. The book also explores genomics, transcriptomics, translational-omics, and metabolomics approaches to understand the pathogenesis and identify potential drug targets. It reviews the role of epigenetic reprogramming in shaping the host-pathogen interactions and presents bioinformatics application in the identification of drug targets. Further, it examines the potential applications of RNA sequencing and non-coding RNA profiling to identify the pathogenesis. Lastly, it offers the current challenges, technological advances, and prospects of using multi-omics technologies in infectious biology.

Book Description
For many years, experiments using chimpanzees have been instrumental in advancing scientific knowledge and have led to new medicines to prevent life-threatening and debilitating diseases. However, recent advances in alternate research tools have rendered chimpanzees largely unnecessary as research subjects. The Institute of Medicine, in collaboration with the National Research Council, conducted an in-depth analysis of the scientific necessity for chimpanzees in NIH-funded biomedical and behavioral research. The committee concludes that while the chimpanzee has been a valuable animal model in the past, most current biomedical research use of chimpanzees is not necessary, though noted that it is impossible to predict whether research on emerging or new diseases may necessitate chimpanzees in the future.
