Book Description
Climate is a dominant factor driving the physical and ecologic processes affecting the Southwest Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network (SWAN). This project was initiated to inventory past and present climate monitoring efforts in the SWAN. In this report, the authors provide the following information: • Overview of broad-scale climatic factors and zones important to SWAN park units; • Inventory of weather and climate station locations in and near SWAN park units relevant to the NPS I&M Program; • Results of an inventory of metadata on each weather station, including affiliations for weather-monitoring networks, types of measurements recorded at these stations, and information about the actual measurements (length of record, etc.); and • Initial evaluation of the adequacy of coverage for existing weather stations and recommendations for improvements in monitoring weather and climate.

Book Description
The Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) serves as a regional organization of the National Park Service for inventorying and monitoring Alaska's parks in the maritime ecoregion of southwestern Alaska. ABR, Inc. is assisting the National Park Service in the design and testing of monitoring protocols for implementation in SWAN. This effort has benefited from other efforts to develop regional monitoring protocols and it is expected that many of the protocols will be applicable to other parks with coastal ecosystems, as well as to U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service coastal refuges.

Book Description
This document provides a comprehensive plan for long-term monitoring of nearshore marine resources in the National Park Service's (NPS) Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) parks. The objective of plan is to assist managers in preserving park resources by documenting changes to these resources over time and suggesting possible causes for these changes. The monitoring encompasses all major elements of the nearshore trophic web, from primary producers to apex predators, and focuses on six vital signs: kelp and seagrasses, marine intertidal invertebrates, marine birds, black oystercatchers, sea otters, and marine water chemistry and quality.
