The material will be presented with the sensitive understanding that because of different research methodologies and varying criteria for identifying both mental disorder and minority status, it is difficult to generalize about mental health differences between racial groups. Despite many years of research, there is still not a clear picture of the mental health status of many minority populations, and little is known about the mental health status of American Indians specifically. Historically, Native Americans have been one of the most neglected groups of people in this country in terms of education, health, and mental health. Little research exists that demonstrates evidence of how life events affect the mental health outcomes of American Indian children and their parents. This study presents first steps in the effort to broaden the scope of adolescent mental health research to include American Indians.
