Optical and Mechanical Properties of Infrared Materials
Author: Stephen M. Copley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Absorption spectra
Languages : en
Pages : 64
Book Description
Optical and mechanical properties of various IR transmitting materials were investigated. Of special interest was the possibility of strengthening such materials through the formation of point defect complexes without increasing their IR absorption. A major facility for determining IR absorption was developed. The materials investigated include alkali halides, alkaline earth fluorides, Al-doped ZnSe and doped MgO. It was found that the hardness of ZnSe doped with al and CaF2 doped with Gd could be increased through thermal treatment, however, the identity of the point defect complex producing this hardening could not be determined. (Author).

A Search for Improved Micrometers Infrared Transmitting Materials
Author: Curtis E. Johnson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 7
Book Description
Efforts to prepare new infrared-transmitting ceramic materials and to improve the mechanical properties of existing materials are in progress. Work on new materials is concentrating on phosphides, sulfides, and mixed phosphide/sulfides. Zinc sulfide with submicron grain size has been prepared from organometallic precursors with the hope of improving strength or fracture toughness. A survey of the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with organometallic compounds was conducted to evaluate this route to ceramic sulfides. Keywords: Infrared optical materials. (JHD).

Infrared Optical Materials with Transmission in the 8-14 Microns and 1-10 Millimeters Regions
Author: Alexander Smakula
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Infrared spectra
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
Optical, dielectric and mechanical properties of alkaline earth fluorides and lead halides have been studied. Purification and growing methods for these crystals and their solid solutions have been established. Crystals were grown from the melt and CaF2 also from the vapor phase. The influence of impurities, contamination during growing, and irradiation on the optical properties has been studied. Properties of pressed material (Irtran 2) have been compared with those of single crystals of CaF2. Absorption edges of lead halides in the ultraviolet and infrared regions have been determined. The microhardness of CaFeBrF2 and SrF2-BaF2 mixed crystals has been determined as a function of composition, and in PbCl2 and PbBr2 as a function of crystallographic direction. (Author).
