Book Description
Monitoring soil moisture is an alternate method to water-based balance methods of managing irrigation water. Using this method you can "see" what is going on in the soil and determine answers to some key irrigation management questions: Did enough water infiltrate the soil? Is too much water being applied? What is the water uptake pattern of the roots? When should irrigation take place? What was the depth reached by the irrigation? Includes 24 figures and 7 tables, metric conversions, and an appendix of typical root depths. One of a series of water management handbooks prepared by the UC Irrigation Program.

Book Description
In many countries irrigated agriculture consumes a large proportion of the available water resources, often over 70% of the total. There is considerable pressure to release water for other uses and, as a sector, irrigated agriculture will have to increase the efficiency and productivity of its water use. This is particularly true for manually operated irrigation systems managed by government agencies, which provide water for a large number of users on small landholdings and represent 60% of the total irrigated area worldwide. Drawing on the author's 30 years of experience in some 28 countries, this book offers knowledge of the management of irrigation and drainage systems, including traditional technical areas of systems operation and maintenance, and expanding managerial, institutional and organizational aspects. Chapters provide guidelines to improve management, operation and maintenance processes, which move management thinking out of traditional public-sector mindsets to a more customer-focused, performance-oriented service delivery. As a practical guide to improve efficiency and productivity in irrigated agriculture, this book will be essential reading for irrigation managers and technicians as well as students and policy makers in water management, agriculture and sustainable development.

Book Description
Soil moisture sensors used to monitor the soil water status are one of the keys to delivering the right amount of water at the right time to satisfy crop water requirements. However, installation, calibration, and maintenance of soil moisture sensing devices and interpretation of data are complicated and tedious for most farmers. Furthermore, the variability, heterogeneity, and complexity of soils and how that interacts with individual soil moisture sensors and those sensors' installation results in inaccurate soil moisture information. The research aims to analyze the soil moisture data signals to estimate field capacity from soil moisture dynamics to assess the field capacity (FC) or "full point" and management allowable deficit (MAD) or "refill point" for irrigation management. The objectives of the research are to use soil moisture dynamics alone to estimate FC (full point) and MAD (refill points) for irrigation management; and to describe best practices for using soil moisture sensors alone to quantify ET and as well as some of the challenges. Results show that the developed algorithm, with simple interpretation and easy calculation, defines FC values from the soil water content sensor data that were reasonable as verified using data from soil water potential sensors co-located with the soil water content sensors. Using the method of estimating field capacity and literature values of FC, PWP, and MAD by different soil textures, we can also identify a usable refill point of the soil. Lastly, there are large uncertainties and inherent variabilities in measuring the consumptive use, or evapotranspiration (ET), using the soil water balance come from the uncertainties and unknowns in measuring deep percolation and capillary rise, and from installation, inaccuracies, and interpretation of soil water content sensors.0́3.

Book Description
Agriculture is one of the few industries that has been creating resources conti- ously from nature. Sustainability of this industry is a crucial issue at now-a-days. Agricultural technologies are important to feed the growing world population. Agricultural engineering has been applying scienti?c principles for the optimal use of natural resources in agricultural production for the bene?t of humankind. The role of agricultural engineering is increasing in the coming days at the forthcoming challenges of producing more food with less water coupled with climate uncertainty. I am happy to know that a book entitled "Fundamentals of Irrigation and On-farm Water Management", written by Engr. Dr. M. H. Ali, is going to be p- lished by Springer. The book is designed to cover the major ?elds of agricultural and environmental engineering such as weather, plant, soil, water, and basics of on-farm water management. The book will be quite useful for the students of agricultural engineering. Students of other related branches of engineering s- ences, and engineers working in the ?eld and at research institutes will also be beni?ted. The book may serve as a text book for the students and as a practical hand-book for the practitioners and researchers in the ?eld of irrigation and on-farm water management. Utilization of the recent literature in the area and citation of relevant journals / reports have added a special value to this book. Considering the topics covered, engineers, scientists, practitioners, and educators will ?nd this book as a valuable resource.

Book Description
Rapid Industrialisation Coupled With Population Explosion Has Resulted In Greater Urbanisation. Because Of These, The Water That Was Available For Agriculture Is Now Being Shared By Various Sectors. This Has Resulted In A Gradual Decline In Per Capita Land And Water Availability. At The Same Time The Need To Increase The Food Production To Feed The Increasing Population Is Being Increasingly Felt. Mismanagement Of Available Water Has Added One More Dimension To This Problem Resulting In Development Of Problem Soils, Thus Causing Reduction In The Production Per Unit Quantity Of Water. Hence It Has Become Absolutely Necessary To Use The Available Water Resources In Such A Manner As To Get The Maximum Returns Per Unit Quantity Of Water. At Present No Book Covers The Multifaceted Nature Of This Problem. Hence In This Book All Aspects Like Methods Of Irrigation, Measurement Of Water, Quality Of Waters, Water Requirements Of Crops, Scheduling Of Irrigation, Water Budgeting, Irrigation Efficiency, Drainage, Recycling, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Physiological Aspects Of Irrigation System, Etc. Have Been Covered. A Separate Section Of Constraints And Weakness In The Current Water Management Practices Is Also Included In This Book. This Book Will Be Of Great Help To The Administrators Dealing With Water Management, Water Technologists, Scholars And Farmers Who Are Taking Steps To Maximise The Benefits Of The Available Water Resources On The Scientific Basis To Get The Higher Productivity Of Water.
