Book Description
Neutrinos are the most abundant massive particles in our Universe but its existence was only predicted 90 years ago. In fact they were not experimentally observed until 60 years ago due to their extraordinarily low cross-section and even nowadays many questions concerning these subatomic particles remain open, as their mass magnitude and ordering, their Dirac or Majorana nature or the possibility of CP-violation.The Standard Model of Particle Physics establishes that neutrinos are massless particles. Nevertheless in 2015, Takaaki Kajita and Arthur McDonald were awarded with the Nobel prize in Physics for the discovery of the phenomenon of neutrino flavour oscillations, only possible if neutrinos are massive, demonstrating that a neutrino of one particular flavour has non-zero probability to be detected with a different flavour. These oscillations are governed by six independent parameters: 3 mixing angles 12, 23 and 13, two mass squared differences and a CP phase responsible for the CP-violation in the leptonic sector, being this last parameter still unknown as well as the neutrino mass ordering...

Book Description
The measurement of the remaining neutrino-mixing angle, [theta]13, is a critical step toward further understanding of neutrino properties and to guide future neutrino oscillation experiments. Double Chooz has a unique opportunity to perform this measurement building on the original CHOOZ reactor anti-neutrino experiment, the experience that set the previous limits on [theta]13. In the first phase of Double Chooz, 101 days of data was analyzed with only the far detector operating of a two-detector plan. In this thesis I will describe the design of the low background neutrino detector and the oscillation analysis performed. From the deficiency between the expected and measured number of electron anti-neutrinos a value of sin2(2[theta]13) = 0.104 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.076(syst) was found for rate only analysis and 0.086 ± 0.041(stat) ± 0.030(syst) with the rate and spectral energy shape analysis.

Book Description
This book is based on the author’s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, θ13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments.

Book Description
This dissertation provides a complimentary analysis to the official Double Chooz experiment measuring the neutrino mixing angle between the first and third mass eigenstates. Double Chooz is a liquid scintillator experiment consisting of two 8.3 ton cylindrical detectors located approximately 1km and 400m away from two 4.25 GW nuclear reactors in Chooz, France. Using 467 live days of data from the far detector along with 9 months of additional data from the upgraded far detector and the newly commissioned near detector, a best-fit value of sin2(2[theta]13) = 0.1086 ± 0.0112 is obtained. Presented in this analysis is the comparison of theoretical prediction and collected data using new experimentally determined U238 flux measurements, the testing of 8 additional isotopes as an explanation for the [4, 6] MeV event excess and the use of an alternative statistical frameworkusing Bayesian statistics. This work concludes with a discussion of the results’ relation to other [theta]13 experiments and possible insights into the discrepancies.

Book Description
This thesis represents the first double differential measurement of quasi-elastic anti-neutrino scattering in the few GeV range--a region of substantial theoretical and experimental interest as it is the kinematic region where studies of charge-parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector most require precise understanding of the differences between anti-neutrino and neutrino scatter. This dissertation also presents total antineutrino-scintillator quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of energy, which is then compared to measurements from previous experiments. Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments, such as DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande, hope to measure CP violation in the lepton sector. In order to do this, they must dramatically reduce their current levels of uncertainty, particularly those due to neutrino-nucleus interaction models. As CP violation is a measure of the difference between the oscillation properties of neutrinos and antineutrinos, data about how the less-studied antineutrinos interact is especially valuable. The measurement described herewith determines the nuclear and instrumental effects that must be understood to undertake precision neutrino physics. As well as being useful to help reduce oscillation experiments' uncertainty, this data can also be used to study the prevalence of various correlation and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus. In addition to being a substantial scientific advance, this thesis also serves as an outstanding introduction to the field of experimental neutrino physics for future students.

Book Description
PASCOS is an interdisciplinary symposium on the interface of of Particle physics, String theory and Cosmology. Over the past two decades these three disciplines have increasingly become closer. Historically there was always a strong overlap between particle physics and cosmology. This connection has become even stronger with the realization that some of the fundamental issues in cosmology such as the presence of dark matter and dark energy may possibly find a resolution only via new theories of particle physics. At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.

Book Description
The neutrino mixing angle theta-13 is the last one which value is still unknown. This dissertation presents an analysis suggesting a non-zero value of the theta-13. The analysis is based on four months of data taken with the far Double Chooz reactor anti-neutrino detector. Using only rate information yields a best fit value of sin2(2theta-13) equal to 0.0934±0.0785 (1 sigma). Incorporating information on the shape of the signal energy spectrum in the analysis results in a best fit value of 0.0849±0.0509 (1 sigma). Based on frequentist studies, sin2(2theta-13)=0 is excluded at the 92.6% confidence level. The frequentist construction using delta chi-square as an ordering rule gives [0.0098, 0.1825] interval for sin2(2theta-13) at 90% C.L.
