Excerpt from Foreign Industries of Eastern Washington, 1966 The trend of lumber production in eastern Washington was much the same as that for the whole State until the end of World War II. Then, in 1946, east-side production began to increase sharply. During the period 1946 63, eastern Washington's softwood lumber production increased 83 percent from 546 million to slightly over 1 billion board feet (table 1, page This relative increase exceeded a similar change of 66 percent for the western pine region and 8 percent for the entire United States. During this same per iod, eastern Washington's share of the Na tion's softwood lumber production increased from percent in 1946 to percent in 1963. For comparison, the 1904-63 lumber production trends for eastern Washington. Washington, and the United States are shown in figure 1. Here, the sharply increasing pro duction in eastern Washington since 1946, relative to both Washington and the United States, is evident. Of 15 cents per 100 pounds, has been made by lumber interests in Washington of railroads serving the Spokane section. The present rate of 28175 cents a. Hundred does not permit lumbermen of the inland empire to compete with coast interests in the ex port of their product. The first move to establish a labor bank in San Francisco was taken by the San Francisco Labor Council, when resolutions were unanimously adopted instructing President George S. Hollis to appoint a committee of eleven mem bers to investigate and report on the feasibility of opening such a bank. The resolutions were introduced by the delegates from the Moulders' Union.
