Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Instruction in Church History Church History is a greatly neglected study. It is rarely taken up even in the course prescribed in our Church schools. With the exception of occasional parochial discourses, very little effort is made to instruct our congregations as to the origin and the development of the Church. One of the reasons for this general neglect of what is admitted to be a really interesting and important study, is the lack of suitable volumes upon the subject. Not that there is a scarcity of Church Histories, but they are usually too erudite and too large to command the attention of other than regular students. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Church History Guericke's Manual of Church History, of which the first division is now presented to the public in an English version, has passed through eight editions in Germany. The work was first published in 1833, and the last volume of the eighth edition appeared in 1855. The demand for so many re-issues of this hand-book, within the space of a little more than twenty years, in a country distinguished for the fecundity of its authorship, and the fastidiousness of its scholarship, affords strong presumptive evidence of its intrinsic merits. During the last twenty-five years, the German mind has been remarkably active in the department of Ecclesiastical History, and the growth of German literature in this direction has been luxuriant; and yet the manual of Guericke continues to hold a place certainly among the very first, as a book for students and lecture-rooms. A brief specification of the leading characteristics of this work may appropriately accompany its first introduction to the American and English public. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 2: Second Impression of the Authorized Translation From the 5th German Edition Boniface VIII and his Quarrel with Philp IV of France-Fifteenth General Council When Celestine V resigned the papal crown, a successor was found in the person of cardinal Benedetto Gaetani, henceforth to be known as Boniface VIII (1294-1303). Though an adept in Canon Law, his hastiness and forceful measures led to his being repeatedly humiliated at the hand of secular princes. From his pontificate dates the decline of the political power of the papacy. He found himself faced by a stupendous task. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1 In composing this Manual our aim was to cast into handy form those main facts of Church History with which every well-trained theological student should be familiar. To attain this end it was necessary, whilst neglecting nothing of importance, to eliminate everything irrelevant or of minor interest, to be content with the briefest possible descriptions, and to arrange our matter in such wise as to make our studious youth thoroughly at home in the vast region of the History of the Church. In the hope of giving an impulse to deeper study, we have been at pains to name the best and most recent works on each subject, and to refer at some length to the more famous points of controversy. In what concerns antiquity, in order to cultivate the spirit of research, we deemed it well, so far as considerations of space permitted, to refer in the footnotes to the original works. To have attempted more would have enlarged this work beyond all reasonable proportions, and increased correspondingly the labour of the student. Every teacher knows by experience how much depends on due measure, and several historians (e.g. Alzog), who, in beginning, were unmindful of this need, were ultimately compelled to abridge their more ponderous works to suit the convenience of colleges. The desire of being, before all else, brief, explains why we have allowed the facts to speak for themselves, and have, so far as possible, refrained from comment. A philosophy of history presupposes a full knowledge of the facts, and where brevity is needed, it is best to confine oneself to the facts. The first edition of this work was published in 1886.
