La question de la définition des fondements religieux et/ou philosophiques des droits individuels de l'homme proclamés à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, en Amérique puis en France, n'a cessé de passionner les penseurs de la modernité politique, et ce dès le lendemain de la Révolution française jusqu'à nos jours. Au lendemain de l'ébranlement constitué par la « révolution des droits de l'homme », pour reprendre le beau titre de l'ouvrage de Marcel Gauchet, les christianismes occidentaux ont eu à se positionner face au succès rencontré par cette idéologie devenue dominante dans les sociétés européennes en voie de modernisation accélérée. Alors que le protestantisme francophone s'est immédiatement senti des affinités électives avec les théories des droits individuels, le catholicisme s'est d'abord arc-bouté contre une pensée jugée par trop orgueilleusement humaine et méprisante des droits premiers de Dieu. Le ralliement de la doctrine catholique à celle de la liberté religieuse au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et le rappel renouvelé de la pensée calviniste au fondement essentiellement divin de la réalité humaine ont permis un rapprochement confessionnel sur la base d'un véritable oecuménisme des droits de l'homme. Mais cette nouvelle compréhension religieuse des droits de l'homme est-elle vraiment la même que celle, toute laïque et essentiellement juridique, défendue par les instances internationales qui lui sont dédiées ? C'est à ce travail de clarification que le présent ouvrage est consacré.
