Book Description
Symmetry breaking is partially responsible for the astounding variety of natural phenomena derived from a few simple and symmetric basic laws. Unique in its multidisciplinary scope, this book considers from a unified point of view the structure and dynamics of vortices in a variety of nonlinear field models with spontaneously broken symmetry. The theory has wide applications, including superfluids, superconductors, rotating spiral waves, and relativistic string theories. This volume is an integrated survey of this rapidly developing field.

Book Description
The 17 invited research articles in this volume, all written by leading experts in their respective fields, are dedicated to the great French mathematician Jean Leray. A wide range of topics with significant new results---detailed proofs---are presented in the areas of partial differential equations, complex analysis, and mathematical physics. Key subjects are: * Treated from the mathematical physics viewpoint: nonlinear stability of an expanding universe, the compressible Euler equation, spin groups and the Leray--Maslov index, * Linked to the Cauchy problem: an intermediate case between effective hyperbolicity and the Levi condition, global Cauchy--Kowalewski theorem in some Gevrey classes, the analytic continuation of the solution, necessary conditions for hyperbolic systems, well posedness in the Gevrey class, uniformly diagonalizable systems and reduced dimension, and monodromy of ramified Cauchy problem. Additional articles examine results on: * Local solvability for a system of partial differential operators, * The hypoellipticity of second order operators, * Differential forms and Hodge theory on analytic spaces, * Subelliptic operators and sub- Riemannian geometry. Contributors: V. Ancona, R. Beals, A. Bove, R. Camales, Y. Choquet- Bruhat, F. Colombini, M. De Gosson, S. De Gosson, M. Di Flaviano, B. Gaveau, D. Gourdin, P. Greiner, Y. Hamada, K. Kajitani, M. Book Description
The European Congress of Mathematics, held every four years, has established itself as a major international mathematical event. Following those in Paris, 1992, Budapest, 1996, and Barcelona, 2000, the Fourth European Congress of Mathematics took place in Stockholm, Sweden, June 27 to July 2, 2004, with 913 participants from 65 countries. Apart from seven plenary and thirty three invited lectures, there were six Science Lectures covering the most relevant aspects of mathematics in science and technology. Moreover, twelve projects of the EU Research Training Networks in Mathematics and Information Sciences, as well as Programmes from the European Science Foundation in Physical and Engineering Sciences, were presented. Ten EMS Prizes were awarded to young European mathematicians who have made a particular contribution to the progress of mathematics. Five of the prizewinners were independently chosen by the 4ECM Scientific Committee as plenary or invited speakers. The other five prizewinners gave their lectures in parallel sessions. Most of these contributions are now collected in this volume, providing a permanent record of so much that is best in mathematics today.

Book Description
Traditional literature in mathematical physics is clustered around classical mechanics, especially fluids and elasticity. This book reflects the modern development of theoretical physics in the areas of field theories: classical, quantum, and gravitational, in which differential equations play essential roles and offer powerful insight. Yang here presents a broad range of fundamental topics in theoretical and mathematical physics based on the viewpoint of differential equations. The subject areas covered include classical and quantum many-body problems, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, magnetic monopoles, special relativity, gauge field theories, general relativity, superconductivity, vortices and other topological solitons, and canonical quantization of fields, for which knowledge and use of linear and nonlinear differential equations are essential for comprehension. Much emphasis is given to the mathematical and physical content offering an appreciation of the interplay of mathematics and theoretical physics from the viewpoint of differential equations. Advanced methods and techniques of modern nonlinear functional analysis are kept to a minimum and each chapter is supplemented with a collection of exercises of varied depths making it an ideal resource for students and researchers alike.

Book Description
This book provides an introduction to the bifurcation theory approach to global solution curves and studies the exact multiplicity of solutions for semilinear Dirichlet problems, aiming to obtain a complete understanding of the solution set. This understanding opens the way to efficient computation of all solutions. Detailed results are obtained in case of circular domains, and some results for general domains are also presented. The author is one of the original contributors to the field of exact multiplicity results.
