Book Description
Excerpt from Lights and Shades of Hill Life in the Afghan and Hindu Highlands of the Punjab: A Contrast The increasing interest that is continually being taken in that great dependency of ours which we call India, leads me to h0pe that the following pages may bring a little fresh light to those who are, unfortunately, unable to visit it for themselves; for even in these days of so-called enlightenment one still at times hears in England the cry of India for the Indians - that theory so plausible to the Western, but so meaningless to the Eastern mind. An endeavour has been made, in taking these two valleys of one province alone of the vast continent, to recall how utterly different in race and nationality, religion and character, the inhabitants we know as Indians are. What we call India has absolutely no meaning to any of the native dwellers Within the area. It is a vast conglomeration of distinct peoples and nationalities, conquered by British blood freely shed, and welded together solely by the physical and moral strength of a superior race - a conglomeration which consists of some fourteen distinct races, speaking some seventy-eight different languages, and living in every possible degree of civilisation. Politically, the native states alone, which cover only about one third of the area of the whole, are governed by over two hundred princes totally independent of each other while in British territory. Book Description
Product Description This is a reformatted edition of the 1895 book and has been developed from different copies of the original work. In this, we have retained the original text and have made only minor corrections to the spellings of some native terms and to the grammar where it couldn't be resisted. We have also included all the illustrations and maps that were in the earlier work. Book Description A fascinating travelogue from the late 19th century giving an account of the journeys made by the author to the valleys of Kulu in the Indian Himalayas and Kuram in NWFP (now in Pakistan); illustrated with beautiful photographs of landscapes and people of both the regions. Reviews of the Book when it was first Published in 1895 "A vivid and straightforward account of two expeditions undertaken by Mr. Gore-one in company with his brother, Colonel St. G. Gore, R.E, to the Kulu district of the Himalayas; the other in company with Mr. Merk, C.S.I., to the Kuram Valley, when Mr. Merk, as Political Officer, was charged with the duty of taking over that turbulent district on behalf of the Government of India. . . . But the distinguishing feature of Mr. Gore's book is . . . the remarkable series of reproductions of photographs taken by himself." - TIMES. "Mr. Gore's experiences amongst these formidable hillmen have enabled him to write a book that is not only entertaining, but eminently instructive. Let us add that it is profusely and beautifully illustrated." - DAILY TELEGRAPH. "Mr. Gore possesses to a high degree the art of descriptive writing . . . we accompany the traveller, see his sights, share his feelings, and are satisfied. To this result, however, it must be admitted that something beyond the mere text contributes. It is adorned with a great number of photographs, which are simply wonderful for their perspicuity and perfection of execution." - GUARDIAN.
