Book Description
This Operational Art handbook is one in a series of six Training and Doctrine Command Pamphlets which document the capabilities-based Opposing Force (OPFOR) model. This model was developed to provide a flexible training threat which can be tailored to represent a wide range of potential threat capabilities and organizations. The model features a heavy and a light OPFOR package, each containing three documents: an organization guide, an operations handbook and a tactics handbook. The capabilities-based OPFOR model represents a break from past practice in two principal respects. First, while the heavy and light packages are based on the doctrine and organization of foreign armies, they are not simply unclassified handbooks on the forces of a particular nation. The OPFOR packages are composites which were deliberately constructed to provide a wide range of capabilities. Second, the packages are not associated with a fixed order of battle but, rather, provide the building blocks from which a large number of potential orders of battle can be derived. The capabilities-based OPFOR model will become the basis for the forces and doctrine used by the OPFOR units at the Combat Training Centers (CTC) and in the TRADOC Common Teaching Scenarios. The heavy and light packages were designed to accommodate the existing CTC OPFORs at the time of publication with relatively minor changes but have the flexibility to adapt to the changing training requirements of the force-projection Army.

Book Description
TRADOC Pamphlet 350-17, Light OPFOR Tactics Handbook is the third volume of the capabilities-based Light OPFOR series of handbooks. This handbook provides the customer with a tactical overview of the Light OPFOR. The focus of the Light OPPOR Tactics Handbook is on the tactics of first-echelon truck-mounted, motorized infantry divisions and below, and how other arms, possibly including tanks, support them. For more detail on mechanized infantry and tank tactics, see the Heavy OPFOR Tactics Handbook. The intent is to use TRADOC Pamphlet 350-17 with TRADOC Pamphlet 350-15, Light OPFOR Operational Art Handbook and TRADOC Pamphlet 350-13, Light OPFOR Organization Guide. Any differences between the organizations in the Light OPFOR Tactics Handbook and the Light OPFOR Organization Guide are intention. Future versions of the Light OPPOR Organization Guide will incorporate these changes. The intent of the Light OPFOR Tactics Handbook is to provide the trainer with a standardized flexible training opponent capable of stressing any or all battlefield operating systems of light U.S. forces. It provides the doctrine to support potential orders of battle built from the Light OPFOR Organization Guide. The first group of topics covered in the Light OPFOR Tactics Handbook includes OPFOR military thought and structure; command and control; march; reconnaissance; offense; and defense. Further chapters discuss artillery, antitank, air, air defense, engineer, and logistics support. Also covered are the uses of electronic combat; chemical and smoke; and camouflage, concealment, and deception.

Book Description
In today's complicated and uncertain world, it is impossible to predict the exact nature of future conflict that might involve the U.S. Army. So the Army must be ready to meet the challenges of any type of conflict, in all kinds of places, and against all kinds of threats. This is the nature of the contemporary operational environment (COE) and the makeup of the opposing force (OPFOR) used in training for the COE. This manual is one of a series that describes an opposing force (OPFOR) for training U.S. Army commanders, staffs, and units. See the References section for a list of the manuals in this series. Together, these manuals outline an OPFOR that can cover the entire spectrum of military and paramilitary capabilities against which the Army must train to ensure success in any future conflict. Applications for this series of manuals include field training, training simulations, and classroom instruction throughout the Army. All Army training venues should use an OPFOR based on these manuals, except when mission rehearsal or contingency training requires maximum fidelity to a specific real-world threat. Even in the latter case, trainers should use appropriate parts of the OPFOR manuals to fill information gaps in a manner consistent with what they do know about a specific threat.
