They have been wonderfully sustained in keeping inviolate the Pledge, notwithstanding the power of their own appetites, and the temptations which surrounded them. In this the most skeptical, if they will not willfully shut their eyes, cannot help seeing nnd acknowledging divine interposition. Among the many millions of erring mortals who have signed this second Declaration of Independence in the civilized world, but few comparatively have gone back, like the dog to his vomit, or like the sow to her wallowing in the mire They have thus far stood firm and unmoved amidst the temptations which have assailed them from within and from without. And we feel warranted in assuring the rum-sellers that their hope of a reaction in this glorious revolution is as the spider's web, weak and easily torn in pieces. The cause has taken too deep a hold on the hearts of the people for such a revolution to go backwards. It is the mysterious work of Heaven, and must finallv prevail over all opposition. Tiie tide of Inlemperance will not be suffered to turn back, and again sweep over the world, destroying in its course every thing beautiful and valuable in it. This is our fond hpe, and this our firm belief. There is one peculiarity in Father Mathew's reading the pledge to the assembled thousands which throng round Teetotal Society is not a sectarian or political society. It has nothing whatever to do with such matters; it embraces members of every creed, and of every shade of politics. Teetotallers should not have any politics, whether lawful or unlawful, connected with them. Those who wish to mingle themselves in the discussion of politics should go somewhere else to do so....

Book Description
The Capuchin friar's temperance campaign from 1838 to 1848, says Townend (British and Irish history, U. of North Carolina- Wilmington) was the single most extraordinary social movement in pre-famine Ireland, and a unique mass mobilization in modern European history as measured by the number of people it involved and its impact on the social fabric and the evolving national consciousness. Mathew (1790-1856) campaigned in Ireland and in Irish diaspora communities in Scotland, England, and America. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
